‘The Ford Model T, also known as Tin Lizzie, is an automobile that was produced by Henry Ford from 1908 until 1927 and is generally regarded as the first affordable automobile to the common middle-class American. Some of this was because of Ford’s innovations, including assembly line productions instead of individual hand crafting’… and this is exactly how tote bag making felt when I was making these three tote bags.

Tote bag assembly line
Nice facts about assembly lines, right? Well, according to Wikipedia. I guess ‘working on the assembly line’ is a little how I felt when I was making tote bags. Normally all my bags are made individually. But now I got this great custom order: three bags, same model, all different, but still matching. I do like a challenge like that. But, to keep the pace I had to work like on the assembly line. These bags are my little T-Fords you could say.
…. aldus Wikipedia over de lopende band. Leuk weetje, toch? Maar zo voelde het wel een beetje toen ik deze tassen aan het maken was, als een lopende band. Normaal maak ik elke tas individueel, maar nu kreeg ik het verzoek om drie tassen te maken: zelfde model, andere stoffen, maar het moest wel een beetje bij elkaar passen allemaal. Superleuke opdracht! Maar ja, als je er dan een beetje ‘de sjas’ in wil houden, dan is bandwerk de enige optie. Deze tassen zijn mijn T-Fordjes, als het ware.

En ik moet zeggen: die Henry Ford had het goed bekeken met zijn bandwerk. Want ik kon lekker doorstomen en was in no-time klaar. Helemaal tevreden met het resultaat! Maar of het nu middenklassertjes zijn…

Veel beter dan de T-Ford, want Henry Ford zei: “People can have the Model T in any colour – so long as it’s black”… Waarom zwart als ge ze in zoveel schone stofkes kunt hebben!
