How to knit and crochet with mohair yarn

by Esther | Happy in Red

I’m fond of mohair yarn, ever since I was a little girl. Whenever my mum allowed me to pick a mohair pullover she couldn’t have made me happier. The soft and fuzzy texture of the sweaters were just so luxurious. And my love for mohair has stayed with me through the years. Mohair yarns have made such a comeback the last few years and I couldn’t be happier. However, knitting and crocheting with mohair can be rather difficult. Therefore, I am sharing the best tips and tricks on how to work with mohair yarn.

About mohair yarn

Mohair is an animal fibre, made from angora goats. These must be the softest goats ever! 100% mohair yarn is so soft, fluffy and knotty that it would be impossible to work with. That’s why you’ll hardly ever encounter yarns that are made from 100% mohair. Most maufacturers combine mohair with another fibre. The most used are a silk thread or something synthetic, like micro or polyester. After plying mohair and the other fibre, a yarn is created that is much easier to knit or crochet with.

Over mohair garen

Crochet or knit with mohair yarn

Because of its fluffy nature, knitting or crocheting using mohair yarn can prove to be quite the challenge. When working with mohair yarn you can feel like the material ‘sticks’ or ‘knots’ easily. And making a mistake in a mohair piece can prove to be very upsetting, as untangling mohair is very hard, if not impossible. Knitting with mohair is more forgiving that crocheting, in general.

Ways of coping with mohair yarn

  • Use needles at least one size larger than advised on the yarn wrapper. This will make it less fidgety to work with mohair yarn and you’ll be clearly seeing the stitches you’re making.
  • Practise your pattern with another (less complicated) yarn, like cotton. When you’re used to the pattern and which stitches you’ll be doing, you can start your mohair project.
  • If you just start working with mohair yarn, keep to easy and plain stitches, like single crochets or double crochets (knitters, just use the knit stitch for your first mohair project) and keep away from cluster stitches, like bobble stitches or popcorns for a bit. Cluster stitches are ‘knotty’ enough with normal yarn, let alone mohair yarn.
  • Watch your work closely. Yes, that means no Netflix binge-watching when working with mohair yarn! Unravelling mohair yarn is just horrible, if not impossible. So if you’ll be making mistakes, you better leave them and cover them up somehow. It’s, therefore, better not to make mistakes.

Vermijd bijvoorbeeld bobbel-steken of andere lastige cluster-steken.

Working with mohair yarn, without the cons

Do you love the lush and luxurious looks of mohair yarn? The softness? The gorgeous colours mohair is often dyed in? But are you afraid of knitting or crocheting with mohair? Don’t worry. Just pick a yarn with a very small amount of mohair, for example, 10% or 20% instead of the usual 60% or 70% mohair. Some fine examples are Scheepjes Stardust (11% mohair) or Rowan Kid Classic (22% mohair).

My crochet patterns with mohair yarn

This crochet pashmina is, without a doubt, the lushest and luxurious item that I have ever made for myself. It’s made with both alpaca and mohair yarn and I absolutely love it. The trick to this pattern is that the stitch is very basic, yet in combination with the mohair, it turns into something you’d pay quite a bit for in any shop. I have written up the crochet pattern, which is FREE for you to use.
