My brand new crochet zig zag shawl

Basically, I couldn’t help myself. When husband and I visited Bologna in Italy 2 weeks ago, I just had to visit a yarn shop or two. Husband waited outside and sighed, deeply. Because really, did I need more yarn? Well, absolutely not. But that has never stopped me before and didn’t stop me now. I walked out with some amazing yarn and knew immediately what I wanted to make with it: a crochet zig zag shawl. Once home I set to work and it’s done already.

Ik kon het niet laten. Toen ik 2 weken geleden in Bologna in Italië was, moest ik even een wolwinkel in wandelen. Mijn man stond, diep zuchtend, buiten. Want ‘had ik nu echt nog meer wol nodig’. Het antwoord daarop is ‘absoluut niet’. Maar dat mag de pret toch helemaal niet drukken? Desalniettemin vond ik er geweldige wol en ik wist ook al meteen wat ik ervan wilde maken: een gehaakte zig zag sjaal. Bij thuiskomst ging ik meteen aan de slag en hij is af.

Crochet zig zag shawl: the yarn

I bought 4 balls of ‘jeans’ coloured yarn in Bologna, 100% cotton and produced in Italy. One ball has 200 meters and it should be worked on a 4mm hook. This all sounds rather heavy, but the yarn is very soft and I decided to crochet my crochet zig zag shawl with it on hook 4.5mm to give my work some more air, and this worked really well.

The denim colours are quite ombre which I love. But in between, I decided to work a row of Scheepjes Stonewashed (Moon Stone) to enhance the ombre effect. The yarn is called ‘Jeans’ by Laines du Nord and I haven’t really found a place to order it online. Too bad huh! However, I have the idea that this yarn is exactly the same as Debbie Bliss Denim DK (colours 5, 4, 3 and 2) and you’d need one ball per colour, and half a ball of Stonewashed Moon Stone (801). But I guess you could also pick different shades of blues from Stonewashed if you want to make a shawl like this. There are blue colours like Larimar, Turquoise, Green Agate, Amazonite en Blue Apatite to choose from. You’d need 2 balls per colour, Moon Stone only requires half a ball.

Ik kocht vier bollen denim garen, 100% katoen en geproduceerd in Italië. Op één bol zat 200 meter en het was bedoeld voor haaknaald 4 mm. Dat klinkt vrij zwaar, maar dit garen is ontzettend zacht en ik besloot mijn gehaakte zig zag sjaal op haaknaald 4.5mm te haken, zodat het net even wat meer ‘lucht’ heeft en dat heeft echt geholpen.

De jeans kleuren lopen van licht naar donker, echt heel mooi vond ik. Maar ik besloot wel om tussen de verschillende kleuren door nog een streepje Stonewashed (kleur: Moon Stone) te doen, om het effect nog eens wat te versterken. Voor de nieuwsgierigen: het garen heet ‘Jeans’ en is van het merk Laines du Nord’. Ik heb even gezocht maar het is in Nederland eigenlijk niet te krijgen (jammer hè). Echter, ik heb het idee dat dit garen exact hetzelfde garen is als Debbie Bliss Denim DK (en dan de kleuren 5, 4, 3 en 2) en dit garen is wat beter verkrijgbaar. Maar je kunt ook andere kleuren Stonewashed kiezen (zoals kleuren Larimar, Turquiose, Green Agate, Amazonite en Blue Apatite bijvoorbeeld). Van Stonewashed zou je 2 bollen per kleur nodig hebben, van wit (Moon Stone) kom je met een halve bol toe. Drops heeft volgens mij ook een denim garen, maar dat heeft niet dit verwassen effect, wat juist wel leuk is.

I have found the crochet pattern for this crochet zig zag shawl on Pinterest (yes, how vague huh). It’s no. 213 of this photo. It looks like this is a photo taken from a book. If anyone knows what the original source is, do let me know as I’d rather give credits where credits are due. Anyway, I used this pattern and started with 80 chains and hook 4.5 mm. After every 15th row, I crocheted 1 row in white (Moon Stone). So hopefully with all this info, you can make a crochet zig zag shaw too, if you like.

Het haakpatroon voor deze sjaal haalde ik, lekker vaag, van Pinterest. Het is nummer 213 van deze afbeelding. Het lijkt me om een afbeelding uit een boek gaan. Als iemand de originele bron weet, laat het me even weten, want die vermeld ik eigenlijk liever. Maar goed. Ik ging met dit patroon aan de slag en zette 80 losse op. Na elke 15 touren haakte ik een tour in het wit (Moon Stone), dus met deze aanwijzingen kun je misschien, hopelijk zelf ook wel aan de gang.
