I hope you all liked the crochet play cube I showed you in my last blog post. It was almost impossible to wipe the grin off my face as I was writing up the crochet pattern. It’s such a fun project to make, and not difficult at all once you get the hang of it. And a play cube like this makes for an excellent newborn gift. Just saying. So, go ahead and make this crochet play cube yourself using my crochet pattern and tutorial below. Have fun.
Hopelijk vonden jullie de gehaakte speelkubus die ik in mijn vorige bericht liet zien leuk. Ik zit er in ieder geval nog met een glimlach naar te kijken bij het uitwerken van het haakpatroon. Het is namelijk ontzettend leuk en helemaal niet zo moeilijk om deze gehaakte speelkubus zelf te maken. Een leuk idee voor een kraamcadeautje of gewoon voor je eigen bloedje. Crochet play cube: ice cream
I have not made one, but two crochet play cubes. The one is this one (with cactii) and I’ve made another one, with ice creams on. I think they’re both adorable and both crochet patterns are free. Find the free crochet pattern for the crochet play cube Ice Cream.
Ik heb niet één, maar twee gehaakte speelkubussen gemaakt. Eentje met cactussen erop en eentje met ijsjes erop. Ik vind ze allebei heel schattig. Beide haakpatronen zijn helemaal gratis. Je vindt het gratis haakpatroon voor de gehaakte speelkubus met de ijsjes hier.
Crochet play cube: what you need
- 258 – Rosewood
- 281 – Tangerine
- 514 – Jade
- 523 – Sweet Mandarin
- 245 – Green yellow
- 106 – Snow White

- A 4 mm hook (or the size you need to obtain gauge)
- Kube filling of 10 x 10 x 10 cm (or 4 x 4 x 4 inch), available at most craft stores
- Darning needle and crochet needle (soft/blunt tip)
- Blocking mat and pins
Gehaakte speelkubus: dit heb je nodig
Ik haakte deze speelkubus met Scheepjes Cahlista. Van 100% katoen. Ik gebruikte de kleuren:
- 258 – Rosewood
- 281 – Tangerine
- 514 – Jade
- 523 – Sweet Mandarin
- 245 – Green yellow
- 106 – Snow White
Je kunt Scheepjes Cahlista online kopen, of bij één van de winkeliers die Scheepjes verkoopt.
Als je liever zelf je kleuren kiest of helemaal loos wilt gaan, kun je ook een Cahlista Colourpack kopen, met amar liefst 109 (!) verschillende kleuren Cahlista. Het zijn bolletjes van 15 gram, dat is per bolletje genoeg voor wat ik met dit patroon van plan ben. Hoewel je van wit beter een grote bol kunt kopen. En Cahlista colour packs zijn bijvoorbeeld hier en hier te koop.
- Haaknaald 4 mm (of de maat die je nodig hebt voor het proeflapje)
- Kubus vulling: ik kocht mijn vulkubus van 10 x 10 x 10 cm hier.
- Maasnaald, borduurnaald (stompe punt)
- Blocking mat en spelden.
Crochet pattern: crochet play cube, cactus cube
PLEASE read the instructions very carefully!
- Crochet 6 patches of 10 x 10 cm.
- Turn your work after every row.
- It’s important that your patch measures exactly 10 x 10 cm (or 4 x 4 inch) when you’re done. If it turns out larger or smaller on a 4 mm hook, try going up or down a hook size until you get it right. Measure this very precisely.
This is how you hook a patch
- Chain 18
- Row 1: chain 1 (doesn’t count as a sc), sc in 2nd stitch from the hook, 16sc.
Row 2 -18: chain 1 (doesn’t count as a sc), 17 sc. - When casting off leave a long tail of thread, you can use this when assembling the cube.
Before starting your cross-stitch, it’s important that you wet block all patches. You can read how to wet block in my online tutorial.
Gehaakte speelkubus: gratis haakpatroon
- Haak je 6 lapjes van 10 x 10 centimeter.
- Let op: keer je werk na elke tour.
- Het is belangrijk dat je lapje precies 10×10 cm meet. Kom je groter of kleiner uit met haaknaald 4mm, neem dan een maatje groter of kleiner om goed uit te komen. Meet het goed op.
Zo haak je een lapje
- Haak 18 lossen
- Tour 1: 1 losse (telt niet als 1v), 1v in 2de van de naald, 16v
- Tour 2 – 18: 1 losse (telt niet als 1v), 17 v.
- Laat een lange draad hangen (ongeveer 30 cm), heb je die alvast om straks de lapjes aan elkaar te naaien.
Ik haakte 1 lapje in 258 – Rosewood, 1 lapje in 281 – Tangerine, 1 lapje in 514 – Jade en 3 lapjes in
106 – Snow White.
Voordat je gaat borduren is het belangrijk om je werk te blocken. Hoe je dit doet, lees je in mijn tutorial.
Embroidering the cactii
Cross-stitch the cacti on. f you’re cross-stitching on crochet for the first time, hold your crochet patch to the light, you’ll see 4 small holes next to every on every side of the V shape of your S stitch. You’ll be working from these ‘holes’. So, top left corner is A, top right corner is B, bottom left corner is C, bottom right corner is D.
Start cross-stitching by pulling up your thread through B, from back to front, to (on the front) to C. Through the back to go A and pull your thread to the right side, and (on the front) go to B to complete your cross stitch. Work all stitches this way and it will look nice and even. Work per colour, so you won’t have so many loose ends in the back.
I crocheted the 3 different cacti on the white patches. The cross-stitch patterns are above this paragraph.
De cactussen borduren
Borduren: ga je borduren op je haakwerk, houd dan eerst even je lapje tegen het licht. Naast de vaste steken zie je als het ware 4 gaatjes, je gaat dus kruissteken ‘om’ een vaste steek heen. De linker bovenhoek heet A, de rechter bovenhoek B, de linker onderhoek C en de rechteronderhoek D.
Steek je garen van achter naar voor in B, ga voorlangs in C. Piep via de achterkant weer omhoog in A en maak je kruissteek af door voorlangs in D te borduren. Als je alle steken op deze manier doet, worden ze mooi hetzelfde. Werk per kleur, dat scheelt losse eindjes in de achterkant.
Ik haakte de drie verschillende cactussen op de witte gehaakte lapjes. Dit zijn de kruissteekpatronen.
Assembling the crochet play cube
Take your 6 patches and sew them together. Use the unworked chains on the sides to help you sew the patches together. Sew them together until you have one patch left. Put the foam cube inside, then sew the 4 sides of the last patch… DONE!
Zet de gehaakte speelkubus in elkaar
Neem je zes lapjes en naai ze aan elkaar. Gebruik aan de zijkanten de onafgewerkte losse steken om de zijkanten netjes aan elkaar te naaien. Naai de lapjes aan elkaar, totdat je nog één lapje over hebt. Stop eerst de kubbus in je haakwerk, leg je lapje er bovenop en naai dan de vier zijdes van je laatste lapjes vast… KLAAR!
