Crochet Japanese flowers scarf in Alpaca Rhythm

by Esther | Happy in Red

So, I bought this brand new coat back in October and I remember saying to my husband: I am not gonna wear my new coat, unless my new scarf is finished. I found the perfect yarn and I started my scarf. But I got busy, way too busy. I was travelling, was busy working and I felt like making other crochet my project. And my new coat? I wore it with another scarf. But now, my new crochet scarf is finished. It’s made with crochet Japanese flowers and I’ve used Scheepjes Alpaca Rythm.

Using Scheepjes Alpaca Rhythm

When I first laid eyes on Alpaca Rythm, it was love at first sight, or feel to be more precise. Do you know the feeling that you grab a ball of yarn and it’s so soft you immediately want to rub it against your cheek? Well, that’s how soft Alpaca Rythm is. All colours are named after dances (isn’t that fun? I think so!) and I picked 7 colours with cute names like Robotic, Hip Hop, Polka, Vogue, Paso, Quickstep en Bop. I only needed one ball of each colour and even after finishing this enormous scarf I still have half a ball of each colour left. Isn’t that economical?

Where to buy Scheepjes Alpaca Rhythm?

Alternative yarn: Drops Alpaca and Rowan Fine Lace.

There are several patterns available online to make crochet Japanese flowers. The original is from Motif Book vol 4 by Nihon Vogue Sha, though that book is hardly available, anymore.

How to make this crochet scarf?

I crocheted no less than 58 Japanese flowers and I joined them as I went along, 3 by 2. This resulted in a crochet scarf of 2 meters long and 25 centimetres wide. Long and skinny, just the way I like it. I can wrap it around twice and then it still hangs very loosely. It’s so fabulous. And since the scarf is so very soft, I can really hide against the early spring cold in it. I used a 3.5 mm hook. It took a little getting used to this yarn as it’s a lace yarn and meant for hook 2.5 mm, which I hardly had any experience with. You really have to pay attention when you work with this yarn, but the result is just so fabulous that I don’t mind paying some extra attention while I crochet. Such a fine looking thread, right? Lucky for me, I also have a jacket that this scarf will be a perfect match for this spring. Can’t wait to wear it.

Love this! That motif was one of the first “adventurous” things I tried to crochet back in the day. All with the wrong hook and yarn, obviously. The alpaca is perfect for this motif, I think I’m going to make one of these!!!
