Crochet headband pattern: free!

Did you know that I’m a runner? Probably not, and that’s okay. Thing is, I actually love to run when it’s freezing cold. It spurs me on, somehow. When it’s crispy out on a winter morning, I am up and running even before dawn. This year I made myself a crochet headband to protect my ears a little and I am so pleased with the design that I’m sharing it with you. Have fun with this crochet headband pattern.

Wist je dat ik graag hardloop? Nee? Geeft niks! Het grappige is dat ik het liefst hardloop als het krakend koud is. Ik krijg daar dus vleugels van. Dus als het zo’n kraakheldere, koude ochtend is, sta ik meestal met hardloopschoenen aan klaar voor mijn rondje. Dit jaar maakte ik een gehaakte haarband om mijn oren tijdens het hardlopen warm te houden. En ik ben er zo blij mee, dat ik nu het gratis haakpatroon met je deel.

Crochet hairband in Softfun Denim

To make this crochet headband I’ve chosen Scheepjes Softfun Denim. This yarn is a combination of cotton and acrylic and has just the right amount of stretch and gives such a lovely stitch definition. I’ve also used it for my Sea shell blanket and woodland ripple blanket. To make a crochet headband like this, using the star stitch, you will only need one ball of Softfun Denim. A fun, easy and cheap way to make a crochet headband, right! For this pattern, I used crochet hook 4 mm.

Gehaakte haarband met Scheepjes Softfun Denim

Ik maakte deze gehaakte haarband met Scheepjes Softfun Denim. Dit garen is een mix van katoen en acryl. Het heeft, wat mij betreft, precies de juiste hoeveelheid stretch voor deze gehaakte haarband. En de steken van de stersteek komen er goed in uit. Ik heb het garen ook gebruikt voor mijn Sea shell blanket en Woodland ripple blanket. Om deze gehaakte haarband te maken, heb je slechts één bol Scheepjes Softfun Denim nodig. Dat wordt dus niet alleen een leuke, maar ook een voordelige gehaakte haarband. Ook weleens leuk. Ik gebruikte haaknaald 4 mm.

Sizing your crochet headband

• Women: circumference head: 55 – 61 cm (21.5 – 24 inch), circumference of this headband: 50 – 55 cm (19.6 – 21.5 inch).
• Child: circumference head: 50 – 55 cm (19.6 – 21.5 inch), circumference of this headband: 45 – 50 cm. ( 17.7 – 19.6 inch)
• In general: deduct 5 cm from your head size to get the right circumference for this headband.
• This is how you measure the circumference of your head.

Meet je hoofdmaat op

• Dames: omtrek hoof: 55 – 61 cm, omtrek van deze gehaakte haarband: 50 – 55 cm.
• Kind: omtrek hoofd 50 – 55 cm, omtrek van deze gehaakte haarband: 45 – 50 cm.
• Over het algemeen: trek 5 cm van je gemeten hoofdomtrek af voor de juiste maat voor deze gehaakte haarband.

Crochet headband pattern

We are making this crochet headband using the crochet star stitch. This is a fun and puffy stitch, perfect for a crochet hairband if you ask me. I’ll first walk you through crocheting the star stitch for this crochet headband, as well as assembling it. Just follow the steps and you will be just fine.

To start

• Chain a multiple of 3 + 2
• I’ve crocheted 89 chains for the headbands in this example.

Row 1

• Start with your star stitch
• Start in 2nd ch from the hook, draw up a loop in each of next 5 chains (6 loops on your hook) (the darts below show you where to pull up the loops), yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch1. This is the top of your first star stitch.
• * Pull up a loop through the eyelet at the centre of the previous star, pull up a loop around last spoke of the previous star, draw up a loop in the same ch as base of the last spoke of the previous star, pull up a loop in each of next 2 ch (6 loops on your hook) (the darts below show you where to pull up the loops), yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch1*. This is the next top of the next star stitch made.
• Repeat ** until the end
• HDC on the last stitch.
• Turn your work.

Je hebt nu de top van de volgende sterrensteek gemaakt.
• Herhaal ** tot het einde.
• Haak een hst op de laatste l.
• Keer je werk.

Row two

• You’ll be making the top of your star stitches
• ch2 (counts as one HDC)
• Crochet 2 HDC in every ‘eye’ of the star you’ve made in the first row. The darts below show where to crochet the 2 HDC.
• HDC on the last stitch.
• Turn your work

Tour 2

• Je haakt nu de bovenkant van de stersteek voor je gehaakte haarband.
• Haak 2l, telt als 1 hst
• Haak 2 hst in elk oogje van de sterren die je in de eerste tour hebt gehaakt. Je kunt bij de pijltjes zien waar je die 2 hst precies moet plaatsen.
• Hst op de laatste steek.
• Keer je werk.

Measuring!

As you can see, you’ve made some pretty star stitches! Before we continue it’s first time to measure. Place the work you have so far around your head, over your ears to check if it fits. It’s alright if you need to pull a bit to make the ends meet, as you want your crochet headband to be nice and tight. If it’s too lose unravel tour work and chain less stitches than the amount you started with (a multiple of 3 + 2) and start again. If the ends don’t meet, unravel your work and chain more stitches than the amount you started with (a multiple of 3 + 2) and start again.

Tijd om te meten

Voor we verder gaan, meten we eerst even of je gehaakte haarband gaat passen. Trek de haarband om je hoofd, over je oren. Het geeft niets als je een beetje moet trekken, dat hoort juist. Je wilt immers dat je gehaakte haarband goed strak zit en niet afglijdt tijdens het lopen of fietsen. Is je haarband te los? Haal je werk uit en haak minder steken dan waarmee je startte (een meevoud van 3+2) en begin opnieuw. Krijg je de eindje niet bij elkaar? Haal je werk uit en begin met meer steken dan waarmee je startte (een meervroud van 3+2) en begin overnieuw.

And continue

• Chain 3. Starting at the 2nd ch from the loop, pull up a loop in the next 2 ch, pull up a loop in each of first 3 HDC’s (6 loops on hook), yarn over hook and pull through all loops on hook, ch1. * Pull up a loop through the eyelet at the centre of the previous star, pull up a loop around last spoke of the previous star, pull up a loop in the same ch as the base of the last spoke of the previous star, pull up a loop in each of next 2 ch (6 loops on your hook), yarn over and draw through all loops on hook, ch1*. Repeat  ** until the end of the row, HDC in the last stitch. Turn your work.
• Ch2 (counts as 1 HDC), 2 HDC in every ‘eye’ of the star you’ve made in the first row. HDC on the last stitch. Turn your work.
• Repeat the above two steps 3 more times.
• Cast off leaving a long yarn tail (at least 30 cm).
• Before assembling your crochet headband you can wet block your work (I did), but you don’t have to.

En ga door…

• 3l. Begin in de 2de losse vanaf de naald, haal 2 lussen op in de 2 lossen, haal 3 lussen op in de eerste 3 hst uit de vorige tour (6 lussen op je naald), draad over je haaknaald, haal door alle lussen op de naald, 1l. *Haal een lus op door het gaatje in het midden van de vorige ster, haal een lus op rond het laatste beentje van de vorige ster, haal een lus op in dezelfde l waar ook het laatste beentje van de ster gemaakt is, haal een lus opde volgende 2l (6 lussen op je naald), draad over naald, haal door alle lussen op de naald, 1l*. Herhaal ** tot het einde, hst op de laatste steek.
• 2l (telt als een hst), 2 hst in elk oogje van de sterren die je in de eerste tour hebt gehaakt. Hst op de laatste steek. Keer je werk. 
• Herhaal de twee stappen hierboven nog 3 keer. 
• Hecht af en laat een lang stuk garen hangen (minstens 30 cm).
• Voordat je je gehaakte haarband afmaakt, kun je je werk eerst wet blocken (dat deed ik in ieder geval), maar het hoeft niet.

Assembling your crochet headband

• Place your work in front of your, right side up (with the pretty stars) and the long tail in the top right corner.
• Fold the two sides a little towards the middle.
• Take the two ends between two fingers (right sides together).
• Fold the left and the right side together. (Your yarn tail should be on the top)
• Put a (darning) needle on the yarn tail and sew the 4 sides together, making sure the needle goes through all 4 sides. Go back and forward a few times, to makes sure it’s really secure.
• Sew in your ends.
• Turn your crochet headband inside out and… you’re done!

Maak je gehaakte haarband af

• Leg je werk met de goede kant naar boven (met de mooie sterren dus), je lang einde garen ligt rechtsboven.
• Vouw de zijkanten naar het midden toe.
• Knijp de zijkanten samen, goede kant tegen elkaar.
• Vouw de linkerkant en rechterkant ineen, zoals hierboven aangegeven. 
• Als alle vier de delen op elkaar liggen, zit je einde garen links boven.
• Naai met een (maas)naald de vier delen goed aan elkaar (let goed op dat je met de naald door alle vier de delen gaat). Als de vier delen steving aan elkaar zitten hecht je af en werk je je eindjes weg.
• Keer je werk binnenstebuiten en je gehaakte haarband is klaar!
