Where to buy wool in Valencia

by Esther | Happy in Red

Valencia was on my wishlist for years! I simply wanted to visit the city in Spain where traditions and groundbreaking architecture meet. And of course, I wouldn’t mind a bit of tapas eating and wool shopping. Valencia is breathtakingly beautiful and I found some really great creative hotspots. So go on and check out my complete travel guide Valencia for the creative traveller.

Fun hotels in Valencia

La Mas Bonita

The apartments of La Mas Bonita are your perfect choice when visiting Valencia, Spain. The colourful aparments are located in a beautifully restored building not too far from the beach, making a stay in La Mas Bonita the ultimate mix between city trip and summer holiday. The appartment are set in an historical buildings and even though the rooms are beautifully refurbished and restored, there are still some amazing old details visible.

Top things to do in Valencia

Catedral de Valencia

Top things to do in Valencia: Catedral de Valencia | Happy in Red

The catedral is one of the top sights in Valencia. The catedral was built in de 13th century on top of a mosque and was extended and rebuilt several times over the centuries. That’s why the catedral looks like it consists of several buildings, though it’s actually just one. Visit the catedral for the beautiful museum and stunning alterpiece.

Top things to do in Valencia: La Lonja | Happy in Red

La Lonja is one of the most stunning buildings in Valencia, and it’s on the UNESCO World Heritage list with reason. It used to be the city’s silk exchange and was built in the 15th century when the silk trade was at its peek. The building is actually built around Sala de Contratación, a grand room dedicated to trade. And there is a beautiful courtyard as well. Do take the audioguide when visiting the building.

Bike ride in Valencia

Fietsen in Valencia (foto: La Mas Bonita) | Happy in Red

One of the top things to do in Valencia is joining a bike tour. The city is actually quite big and there are top sights allover the place. Since there are so many bike paths, a bike is the preferred method of transport. If you’re pressed for time and want to see all the top sights, a bike tour is the way to go. If you’re more confident and feel like exloring the city by bike by yourself, renting a bike is a great (and cheap) option.

Fietsen in Valencia is ontzettend leuk!

Mercado central

Top things to do in Valencia: Mercado central | Happy in Red

Valencia’s central covered market, the Mercado Central, is a sight to behold. The building was designed in moderist style at the beginning of the last century. And inside things get even better with hundreds of stalls selling everything from sausages, hams, cheeses, vegetables, fish, shellfish and fruit. There is a bar in the middle of the market which is one of the best places for lunch in the entire city.

Top things to do in Valencia: Jardines del Turia | Happy in Red

Because the river Turia kept overflowing and causing trouble for the city, it was decided in the 1950’s to drain the river and turn it into a city park. And that definitely was the best decision, ever. The Jardines del Turia are now one of the top things to do in Valencia. The 10km long gardens stretch out from the Bioparc in the East towards the Ciudad de las artes y las ciencias in the west, all the way to the beach. It’s the perfect place for a walk or a bike ride, but it’s also the perfect place to visit with kids as there are so many excellent playgrounds.

I guess this must be the top thing to see in Valencia. The Ciudad de las artes y las ciencias is simply stunning: a series of spectacular buildings designed by Valencia-born architect Santiago Calatrava. The beautiful buildings, surrounded by water, consist of a science museum, aquarium and opera house. It’s possible to paddle amongst the buildings and the museums are a great visit, with or without kids.

Creative hotspots in Valencia

Maria Mandiles

Maria Mandiles is not a shop, but a café and restaurant that most creatives will definitely enjoy. I simply loved the Maria Mandiles branch in Barrio del Carmen, as the restaurant is simply stuffed with crochet. From crochet pillows on all the chairs to granny square blankets and crochet baby clothing hanging from a makeshift clothing line on the ceiling. And it’s a great place for lunch and dinner. There are some great menu-deals and if you order some tapas, you’ll get loads and loads and loads of food.

Hilaturas Sonia Juan

If you walk towards the city centre, along the cathedral and Plaza de la Reine, you’ll find yourself (after a short search) on Plaza Redonda. A round square surrounded by high century-old buildings, this used to be the abattoir of Valencia but hasn’t been used like that for quite a while now. Now you’ll find stalls and stalls selling lace, fabrics, embroidery thread and yarn on this little square. You won’t be able to miss Hilaturas Sonia Juan, selling everything from yarn, abroidery thread and other craft materials. I love it.

Heerlijk.

Lanas Derecho y Revés

If you’re looking for a woolshop in Valencia, hread straight to Lanas Dereche y Reves (which means to knit and purl) and this is a real yarn shop. When I walked in there was a club of Spanish ladies knitting and chatting and the atmosphere was lovely for browsing and getting some ispiration. This yarn shop mainly sells Katia and Rowan yarns, though there are a few other brands as well.

La Vieja Oveja is a relatively new shop and a perfect place for crafter. It’s such a welcoming wool shop. Nice and spacious, with loads of space to browse, but also to just have a seat and start crocheting or knitting on the spot. Plus, this shop is really childfriendly.

Embolic

A trip to Valencia isn’t complete without a trip to the beach, and while you’re headhing there you better check out this lovely wool shop in Valencia: Embolic. At Embolic all crafters are welcome. While a lot of wool shops are focussing on knitting, Embolic also has loads of inspiration for crocheters (which I love), but you can also find lovely fabrics and notions there. A great place for wool and inpsiration.
