Creative travel guide: Trier, Germany

It wasn’t my first visit to Trier, Germany. I have visited a couple of times when a friend of mine lived there. But, with my friend I spent most my time drinking coffee and chatting the dat away instead of doing any sightseeing. This time, however, I was visiting Trier for work, did all the interesting things there are to do in Trier and looked up the most amazing creative hotspots. Read on and see for yourself.

Het was zeker niet mijn eerste bezoek aan Trier. Ik bezocht de stad meerdere keren, toen een vriendin van mij er nog woonde en studeerde. Maar eerlijk is eerlijk, tijdens die bezoeken dronken we vooral koffie en kletsten we de uren weg, in plaats van van ik alle bezienswaardigheden eens goed tot me nam. Echter, dit keer was ik in Trier voor mijn werk, zag ik alle bijzondere bezienswaardigheden in Trier én zocht ik meteen de leukste creatieve plekken op! Lees verder en kijk zelf.

About Trier, Germany

Trier is the oldest city in Germany. When the Romans came, some 2000 years ago, people were already living in the area for thousands of years. But the Romans turned it into an imperial city and Trier turned into one of the four most powerful cities of that time. And the Romans left some amazing traces, amfi theatres, thermal baths, palaces, the lot. This is why Trier is called the Rome of the north. And since Rome is so overrun by tourist these days, I think Trier in Germany makes a wonderful alternative indeed.

Trier is de oudste stad van Duitsland. Toen de Romeinen er neerstreken, woonden er al duizenden jaren mensen. Maar de Romeinen maakte er, voor die tijd, een echte metropool van en het groeide uit tot de grootste stad in West-Europa. Met alles wat er bij die Romeinen bij kwam kijken: thermen, paleizen en een amfitheater. Dat Trier het ‘Rome van het noorden’ wordt genoemd, is wat mij betreft ook helemaal terecht. En stiekem een mooi alternatief ook voor Rome, waar het op dit moment wel erg toeristisch is.

• Trier doesn’t have its own airport, but it’s easy enough to fly to Luxembourg.
• From Luxembourg simply take a train to Trier. Trains leave every 40 minutes and the journey takes less than an hour.
• Driving to Trier? Choose a hotel with parking space, as this will save you loads of parking fees.

Plan je reis naar Trier

• Je reist heel gemakkelijk met de trein naar Trier. Vanuit Nederland stap je over in Brussel en Luxemburg. Of je stapt over in Keulen. 
• Ga je met de auto naar Trier? Zorg dan voor een hotel met parkeerplaats, dat scheelt een hoop parkeerkosten.
• Wist je dat je je stedentrip Trier ook gemakkelijk kunt combineren met een bezoek aan Luxemburg Stad, Namen of Metz?

Vienna House Easy

Vienna House Easy is situated a little outside the city centre of Trier and perfect if you’re visiting the city by car, as the hotel has its own parking space. The rooms are very comfortable, lovely and colourful. They have all you could possibly need during a city break. The hotel also has a very fun bar. I suggest you take the opportunity to rent bikes at the hotels as Trier and its region are just perfect for bikerides.

Het Vienna Easy House ligt een klein eindje buiten het centrum van Trier en is een goede keuze als je met de auto naar Trier gaat, omdat het hotel een eigen parkeerplaats heeft. De kamers van het hotel zijn comfortabel, heel fijn en lekker kleurrijk. Je hebt er alles wat je maar nodig zou kunnen hebben. In het hotel zit ook een leuke bar. Als je zelf geen fietsen bij je hebt, is het een aanrader om in het hotel fietsen te huren. Trier en omgeving zijn namelijk schitterend om met de fiets te ontdekken. 

Coffee Fellow Hotel

The Coffee Fellows Hotel must have one of the most beautiful settings of the entire city, next to the old Roman bridge, overlooking the old town and the Mosel River. The hotel offers various sorts of rooms and apartments, so no matter with whom you’re traveling, you will find a room that suits you. The rooms are stylish and the breakfast is amazing.

Het kan niet anders of Coffee Fellows Hotel ligt op één van de mooiste plekken in Trier. Aan de voet van de Römerbrücke, aan de oevers van de Moezel, met uitzicht op de oude stad. Het hotel biedt verschillende soorten kamers en appartementen, dus wat je reisgezelschap ook is, er zit altijd een goede kamer tussen. De kamers zijn heel stijlvol ingericht en het ontbijt is echt subliem. 

Top things to do in Trier

Porta Nigra

The Porta Nigra (which translates into The Black Gate) is Trier’s most famous landmark and dates back all the way to Roman times, as it was built in the 2nd century and it’s been standing strong ever since. For a short time it was turned into a church in the 11th century. Visit the gate to see both Roman and Christian remains and enjoy the view over Trier’s old town.

De Porta Nigra (de zwarte poort) is zonder twijfel één van de meest bekende bezienswaardigheden in Trier. En het dateert uit de tijd van de Romeinen: de poort werd in de 2de eeuw gebouwd en staat daar dus al die eeuwen stevig en trots. In de 11de eeuw werd de poort kortstondig omgetoverd tot een kerk. Bezoek de poort om de overblijfselen uit zowel Romeinse als Christelijke tijden te zien en te genieten van het uitzicht over de Altstadt van Trier.

Konstantin Basilika

The Konstantin Basilika was built in te 4rth century as Roman Emperor Constantine’s throne, but is now a rather stern protestant church. The building is sure impressive, as it’s a huge one-room building: the largest surviving single-room Roman structure in the world.

De Konstantin Basilika is gebouwd in de 4de eeuw als troonkamer voor de Romeinse keizer Constantin. Het is het grootste uit één zaal bestaande Romeinse bouwwerk ter wereld. Op dit moment is het een grootse, wat stemmige protestante kerk. 

Hauptmarkt

The Hauptmarkt is probably my favourite thing to see in Trier. The central square of the city us surrounded by medieval en renaissance candy-coloured buildings and has a pretty fountain from the 16th century in its centre. You can buy flowers, snacks and wine from stalls every day of the week, except for Sundays.

De Hauptmarkt vind ik toch wel het leukst in Trier. Het centrale plein van Trier is omzoomd door poederkleurige gebouwen uit de middeleeuwen en renaissance en heeft een heel fraaie fontein uit de 16de eeuw in het midden. Behalve op zondagen kun je de hele week op de Hauptmarkt terecht voor bloemen, wat lekkers en een goed glas wijn. 

Trierer Dom

The Dom of Trier is built on top of a Roman Palace, the palace of Constantine’s mother to be exact. Roman parts can still be seen and the rest of the church has been built throughout the centuries, so there are Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque parts. Very interesting.

De Dom van Trier is bovenop een oud Romeins paleis gebouwd, dat van keizer Constantijns moeder. Romeinse overblijfselen van dit paleis zijn nog altijd zichtbaar. De rest van de Dom is er daarna stukje bij beetje op- en aangebouwd en daarom is de kerk nu een fraai samenraapsel van Romaanse, Gotische en Barokke elementen. Heel interessant.

Kaiserthermen

Yes, more Roman remains. Because, why not. The Kaiserthermen are a huge therman bathing complex which you simply have to see and experience. The striped, arched lookout tower is an absolute must-see, as well as the underground labyrinth of hot and cold water baths and heating channels.

Ja hoor, nog meer Romeinse overblijfselen. De Kaiserthermen zijn echt enorm en moet je echt hebben geziens als je in Trier bent. De grote uitkijktoren op één van de hoeken is heel indrukwekkend om te bezoeken. Daarna daal je af in een labyrinth van koudwaterbaden en verwarmingsbronnen. 

Rheinisches Landesmuseum

The Rheinisches Landesmuseum has rooms and rooms and rooms filled with Roman gold, coins, tombstones and giant mosaics. It’s all incredibly impressive. The whole museum is just one highlight after another. A visit to the museum brings Roman life in the 4th century properly to life.

Het Rheinisches Landesmuseum heeft zalen- en zalenvol met geweldige historische kunstschatten, zoals Romeins goud, muntstukken, graftombes en gigantische mozaïeken. Je wandelt van hoogtepunt naar hoogtepunt in dit museum. Na je bezoek heb je echt een goed idee van hoe het leven er in Trier in de tijd van de Romeinen uit moet hebben gezien. 

Karl Marx Haus

When visiting Trier do visit the Karl Marx Haus. Karl Marx was born in Trier and his birth house is now a very fine museum. You’ll get to know all you can know about his person, but also his work and ideology and how later on lots of (dictators and rebels) people used and misused his ideals. I thought it was very interesting, the exhibit is in both German and English. And serious fun: at the crossroad you can see Karl Marx traffic lights, I kid you not. Very adorable. And the green Karl is holding Das Kapital. What’s not to like?

Ga tijdens je stedentrip Trier naar het Karl Marx Haus. Echt, doen. Karl Marx werd in Trier geboren en zijn geboortehuis is omgetoverd tot een heel erg goed museum. Je krijgt meer inzichten in de mensch Marx, zijn ideeën en hoe daar door anderen mee is omgegaan. Ik vond het heel erg interessant. En het allerleukste: op het kruispunt bij het museum zijn Karl Marx verkeerslichten. Hoe schattig! Als Karl op groen staat heeft hij Das Kapitaal bij zich. Hoe leuk is dat.

Creative hotspots in Trier

Luftmasche

Luftmasche is a lovely woolshop in Trier, selling mostly German yarn brands and Lang yarns. Oh, and loads and loads of pretty buttons. The shop is right in the city centre and the staff is lovely.

Bij Luftmasche verkopen ze vooral de grote bekende Duitse wolmerken en de garens van Lang. Oh ja en een heleboel knoopjes! Het personeel is heel vriendelijk. Dus zeker leuk om even te gaan kijken.

Käthe Faber

A little down the road from Luftmasche is Käthe Faber, another shop for craft-lovers. The shop sells (beautiful!) fabrics mostly, but also has a rather good collection of yarn, selling mostly Lana Grossa yarns. It’s really worth a peek inside.

In dezelfde straat als Luftmasche zit Käthe Faber, nog een leuke zaak voor elke creatieveling. De winkel heeft vooral een flinke (en mooie!) stoffencollectie, maar ook wel garens, vooral van Lana Grossa. Ga er vooral even naar binnen.

Cupcake kitchen im Posthof

Another really love place in the city centre of Trier is Cupcake kitchen im Posthof, in the courtyard of the old (and beautifully renovated) post office. The cupcakes are baked fresh and there are different flavours every day.

Nog een leuke plek in het centrum van Trier is Cupcake Kitchen im Posthof. Superleuk! Versgebakken cupcakes, elke dag weer andere. Een prima plek voor een lange koffiepauze.
