Have you ever thought about visiting Luxembourg City? Either you never head of the capital of this tiny European country or you simply thought ‘it’s so small, how can it be interesting’. And that’s okay. Loads of people wouldn’t give Luxembourg City as second thought. But I think you should. First of all, Luxembourg City is absolutely stunning. Secondly, there is loads to see and do. Plan your trip to Luxembourg City

• When you’re in Europe, you can easily fly into Luxembourg City. The country’s only airport is only a short distance away from the city centre, which you can easily reach by tram or bus.
• Though flights to Luxembourg can prove to be quite expensive, especially when you’re not living in Europe. Alternatively, find a cheap flight to Brussels (and there are loads of options) and then take the (high speed) train to Luxembourg City, the train journey is pretty swift.
• If you’re only spending a short amount of time in the city the Hop on hop off bus is your best friend. A ticket enables you to see most of the sights in just a few hours and you can hop off at the sights you want to take a better look at.

Plan je bezoek aan Luxemburg Stad

• Je kunt heel gemakkelijk vliegen naar Luxemburg Stad. Je vliegt binnen 45 minuten naar Luxemburg Stad, het vliegveld ligt vlakbij het centrum en is gemakkelijk te bereiken met bus of tram.
• Maar het is misschien wel het zo gemakkelijk (en beter voor het milieu) om met de trein naar Luxemburg te reizen. Dat is helemaal niet zo duur en je hebt er eigenlijk best snel. 
• Heb je maar weinig tijd? Stap op de Hop on hop off bus, dan kun je de leukste bezienswaardigheden in de stad in een korte tijd ontdekken.

From the hotel all the sights of Luxembourg City can be easily explored. The hotel offers everything from superior double rooms to fancy suites.

La Pipistrelle Hotel is een ontzettend mooi boetiekhotel in het hartje van de stad, het ligt redelijk dicht bij het centraal station van Luxemburg Stad. als je in dit hotel logeert, kun je heel gemakkelijk alle bezienswaardigheden in de stad ontdekken. Het hotel heeft gewone tweepersoonskamers, maar ook familiekamers en suites. 

Hotel Perrin

Hotel Perrin is situated close to the central station of Luxembourg City, a great location. From the hotel, it’s pretty easy to discover all the sights of the city. The rooms are spacious and vey comfortable. You’ll also enjoy the breakfast in Hotel Perron.

Hotel Perrin ligt vlakbij het station van Luxemburg Stad. Lekker centraal, dus een goede startplaats voor het ontdekken van alle bezienswaardigheden in de stad. De kamers zijn ruim en netjes. En je gaat genieten van het ontbijt ‘s ochtends. 

Top things to do in Luxembourg City

Grund

Luxembourg City is devided in a lower and a higher half. The low town is called Grund (which means ground), which is basically a very pretty waterside area in a sort of valley. There is nothing better than going café shopping in the pedestrian lanes.

Luxemburg Stad bestaat uit een hoge en een laaggelegen stad. De laaggelegen stad heet Grund en is min of meer gelegen in een soort vallei aan het water. Het is ene prachtig dromerig deel van de stad met leuke smalle voetgangersstraatjes met heel leuke cafés. 

Casemates du Bock

The Casemates du Bock are the top attraction of Luxembourg City, in my humble opinion. The casemats form a honeycomb of rock galleries and passages, perfected by the French engineer Vauban. For centuries and centuries these underground dwellings carved in the rocks of the city housed garrinsons, but also entire villages when needed, including bakeries and butchershops. During the First and Second World Wars the casemats sheltered almost 40,000 locals.

De Bock Kazematten zijn wat mij betreft de meest belangrijke van alle bezienswaardigheden in Luxemburg Stad. Het gangenstelsel vol kamers en zalen werd in de 15de eeuw al uitgehakt en in de 17de eeuw geperfectioneerd door de Franse ingenieur Vauban. Er hebben hier gigantische garnizoenen gehuisd, inclusief winkels, zoals bakkerijen en slagers. Tijdens de Eerste en Tweede Wereldoorlog gebruikten de lokale bevolking de kazematten als schuilkelder. Een bezoekje waard.

Grand Duchal Palace

Luxembourg’s Grand Duchal Palace was originally built in the 16th century, but adapted and extended later on. Nowadays, the Grand Duke still has his offices in the palace and the parliament uses the Chamber of Deputies. If you visit Luxembourg City in summer, you’re in luck as the palace opens its door for guided tours in several languages. During the tour you get to know all about Luxembourg’s royal family and have a peek into the palace’s rooms.

Het Paleis van het Groot Hertogdom stamt uit de 16de eeuw, maar werd door de eeuwen heen aangepast en uitgebreid. Vandaag de dag heeft de Luxemburgse Groot Hertog hier nog zijn kantoor en ook het parlement gebruikt het parlement. Als je de stad ‘s zomers bezoekt heb je geluk, want tijdens het zomerreces kun je mee met een rondleiding door het paleis. Je komt dan vooral veel te weten over de geschiedenis van de Luxemburgse Koninklijke familie, maar een kijkje in de fraaie zalen ontbreekt natuurlijk niet. 

Old Town

Luxembourg City’s Old Town is rather small and snug and is easily discovered by foot. Because of the many sandstone buildings, it really seems like the sun is always shining in the old town. In summer the Place des Armes is the please to be with loads of outdoor cafés.

De oude stad van Luxemburg Stad is niet zo groot, maar wel heel knus en gezellig. Je kunt deze prima te voet ontdekken. Dankzij de vele zandstenen gebouwen, lijkt het altijd zonnig te zijn in de stad (net als in Metz, eigenlijk). In de zomer, of gewoon met lekker weer, zet je meteen koers naar Places des Armes om daar neer te ploffen op één van de terrasjes. 

Cakes at Oberweis

If you would have told me that Luxembourg City is a gastronomic heaven, I wouldn’t have believed you. But it is. It really is. You can taste the finest local cheeses, charcuterie, wines and pastries in the city. Heck, I think I tasted the best hot chocolate ever when I visited Luxembourg City. Now, if you have a bit of a sweet tooth like me, please do visit Oberweis. This café is open from morning til night and even though you can order anything off the menu, I highly recommend trying one of the beautiful cakes on display. You won’t be dissapointed.

Als je mij had verteld dat Luxemburg Stad een walhalla is voor smulpapen, dan had ik je voor gek verklaar. Maar het is echt zo. Sterker nog, ik denk dat ik de lekkerste warme chocolademelk ooit op heb in deze stad! Maar je kunt hier echt de beste lokale kazen, wijnen, vleeswaren en zoetigheden proberen. Als je, net als ik, nou een beetje een zoetekauw bent, dan moet je echt even langs Oberweis. Dit restaurant is de hele dag open en hoewel je gewoon van de kaart kunt bestellen, moet je van mij simpelweg één van de overheerlijke taartjes uit de vitrine bestellen. Krijg je geen spijt van. 

MUDAM

MUDAM is Luxembourg’s finest Museum of Modern Art, and it’s a real treasure. The rooms are huge and perfect for whatever exhibition is on. I recomment visiting in the morning and taking your time for your visit, as the café is absolutely lovely and serves up a great lunch (especially on Sundays). Also, take a good look at the exterior of the museum as it’s built on teh old foundations of the city and these are still well-visible.

MUDAM is het geweldige museum voor moderne kunst van Luxemburg Stad. The zalen zijn enorm en lenen zich geweldig voor welke tentoonstelling er op dat moment dan ook is. Ik raad je aan om het museum ‘s ochtends te bezoeken en lekker je tijd te nemen. Want daarna kun je namelijk ontzettend lekker lunchen in het geweldige café van het museum, de brunch- en lunchopties op zondag zijn ook geweldig. Neem ook een kijkje bij de buitenkant van het gebouw. Het museum is namelijk gevestigd op de oude fundamenten van Luxemburg Stad en de resten zijn nog goed zichtbaar. 

Luxembourg by bike

One of the best ways to discover the city is to see Luxembourg City by bike. It’s safe and fun. The guided bike tour takes about three hours and you’ll get to know everything there is to know about the city and you’ll see top sights such as The Duke’s Palace, the Kirchberg neighborhood, Chemin de la Corniche and the city’s old town.

Het is een ontzettend leuk idee om Luxemburg Stad op de fiets te ontdekken. Ik ga altijd graag mee met de tours van Baja Bikes, omdat de gidsen zo leuk zijn (en vaak nog Nederlanders ook, kun je ze lekker het hemd van het lijf vragen) en omdat je in korte tijd de leukste plekken van de stad ontdekt en allemaal bijzondere dingen te weten komt. Tijdens deze fietstocht kom je langs de highlights van Luxemburg Stad. 

Visit the Christmas Market

In the advent period the streets of Luxembourg City are filled with hundreds of stalls, set up in different locations throughout the city, spreading out from the city centre to train station. You’ll find Christmas decoration, craft products (whoop!), regional food and drink, clothes and jewellery. For the kids there’s a ferris wheel, a miniature train and an ice skating ring. The city is beautifully decorated. So if you’re thinking about visiting in December, please do.

In de advent periode zijn de straten van Luxemburg Stad gevuld met honderden kraampjes, verspreid over verschillende locaties. Van het oude centrum tot de stationsbuurt. In de kraampjes vind je de mooiste kerstdecoratie, knutselspullen, handgemaakte cadeautjes, lokale lekkernijen, sieraden en kleding. Voor de kinderen is er een reuzenrad, mini-treintje en een schaatsbaan. De stad ziet er prachtig uit. Dus denk je eraan om in de kerstperiode een stedentrip Luxemburg te maken? Zeker doen!

Creative hotspots in Luxembourg City

Bastelkiste

Bastelkiste is your favourite craft-walhalla in the trainstation-area of Luxembourg City. There is a large yarn department within the store, and loads of crochet inspiration, but there is just so much more. Felt, fabrics, buttons, craft paper and notions. Be prepared to spend more time here than anticipated.

Je vindt Bastelkiste in de stationswijk van Luxemburg Stad. En het is het walhalla voor elke creatieveling. Ja, er is genoeg garen te vinden, en heel veel haakinspiratie. Maar je vindt er nog zo veel meer. Vilt, stoffen, knoopjes, creatief papier en fournituren. Het maakt niet uit welke hobby je hebt, bij Bastelkiste breng je veel meer tijd door dan je je had voorgenomen. 

Vintage home & more

You’ll be able to find loads of fun vintage stores in the heart of Luxembourg City. Some have the best preloved items, some stores sell a combinations of previously loved and retro (but new) articles. Vintage home & more belongs to the latter and is a lovely place to roam about and find something lovely for your home.

In Luxemburg Stad vind je een heleboel leuke kleine winkeltjes. Soms kom je heel fijne vintage winkels tegen en sommige winkels hebben zowel vintage als (nieuwe) retro items. Vintage home & more is er zo een. Een zalige winkel om even lekker te snuisteren en wat leuks voor je huis te vinden. 

Kaale Kaffi

Kaale Kaffi is one off my favourite creative hotspots in Luxembourg City. The shop-cum-café is just so full of atmosphere. You’ll be drinking coffee and having freshly baked cake on vintage and antique armchairs and sofas whilst enjoying piled of old books, art work and china. Basically, everything you see (or drink from) is for sale. So don’t hesitate to take something home with you.

Kaale Kaffi is één van mijn favoriete adresjes in Luxemburg Stad. De winkel is tegelijk een koffiezaak en je kunt hier gezellig iets drinken en huisgemaakte cake eten op een antieke stoel, bank of chaise longue omringd door stapels boeken, oud serviesgoed en kunstwerken. Eigenlijk is alles wat je ziet (en waar je uit drinkt) te koop. Dus twijfel vooral niet als je iets mee naar huis wilt nemen. 

Markets of Luxembourg City

Until recently an (organic) fresh market could be found every Wednesday and Saturday on the central square Place Guillome III. But since the square is being renovated this market has been moved to Place Emile Hilimius for a while. It is a great place to visit though. Think fresh fruit and veggies, all grown locally. Local wine, local cheese. There is enough choice to buy yourself a fine platter of antipasti for later in the day. On the same square you’ll often find the flea market on Saturday with stalls filled with paintings, antique furniture and silverware.

Tot voorkort vond de versmarkt in Luxemburg Stad plaats op zaterdagen en woensdagen op het Place Guillome III. Maar door de werkzaamheden op het plein is de markt voorlopig even verplaatst naar Plae Emile Himilius. Het is een geweldige plek om even te bezoeken. Vers fruit, mooie groentes, allemaal uit de buurt. Maar ook lokale wijnen en kazen. Je kunt genoeg lekkernijen kopen om een hele borrelplank bij elkaar te smokkelen. Op datzelfde plein vind je regelmatig op zaterdagen de Brocante markt, met kraampjes vol schilderijen, antieke meubelen en porselein en zilverwerk.

Veritas

Hurrah! This Belgian chain can also be found in Luxembourg City! Of course, I also know Veritas from my visits to Antwerp, Gent and Bruges. But it’s a really great place to shop, so I go there wherever I find and see one. The Veritas in Luxembourg City can be found in the trainstation-area. It’s a large store with yarn, fabric and notion, but also ready made items. I bought a pair of espadrilles when I visited and some fun fat quarters.

Hoera! Er is ook een Veritas in Luxemburg Stad. Natuurlijk ken ik de winkel uit België en ik bezocht de winkel al eens in Antwerpen, Brugge en Gent. Maar ik vind het altijd leuk om er één tegen te komen, dus ga altijd even naar binnen. Ik bezocht de Veritas in het stationsgebied van de stad en vond het een heel fijne, ruime winkel met heel veel wol, stoffen, fournituren en kant-en-klare producten. Ik vertrok er met een paar nieuwe espadrilles en een stapeltjes stoffen.
