Creative travel guide London, England: the most beautiful wool shops in London | Happy in Red

Plan your trip to London

  • It really doesn’t matter where you’re from, you will always find some affordable flights to London, loads of airlines fly directly to one of the London airports.
  • There are loads of hotels in London and it can be very hard to choose an hotel that’s both fun ánd affordable. I can highly recommend Point A Liverpool Street and London Moxy Stratford.
  • Now, you won’t get anywhere in London if you don’t use the subway (‘the tube’ or ‘the underground’), so get yourself an Oyster Card. You can charge this card as you go and with it you can travel on all public transport in London. And you’ll definitely need an Oyster Card if you’d like to visit several wool shops in London!
  • Now, London is by no means a cheap city. But if you take along The London Pass you will have free access to more than 80 attractions in the city.

Loop Knitting is a top reason to jump on the tube to visit Islington, it’s one of the most beautiful wool shops in London. You can have your pick from well-known yarn brands to indie dyers and there are loads of ready-made kits for your next project. Apart from yarn there is also some haberdashery for sale, like fabrics, embroidery threads and hoops, and buttons.

Slipstitch

This wool shop in London, located in Alexandra Palace, is absolutely lovely for knitters and crocheters as it solely focuses on yarn. You’ll find brand at Slipstitch, suchs as Drops, Rico, Rowan and West Yorkshire Spinners. But if you’re into sewing, embroidery or macramé you will also find loads of material to your liking.

Wild and Woolly

Wild and Woolly, located in Lower Clapton, is a wool shop in London that focuses on where yarn comes from. And specifically, from what animal. So if you always wanted to get your hands on yarn from a specific flock of sheep in Spain, or sheep in Brittany, then this is your chance. Seriously, the owners know everything about each skein of yarn in their shop and it’s just so interesting to go and have a look (and indulge a little).

Knit Works London

I think ‘utter greed’ is how I’d describe feeling walking into Knit Works London. This wool shop in London’s hip East end specializes in machine knittting, but there is a yarn shop as well. There are hundres of cones carrying every weight of yarn you could think of, in every imaginable colour. Though these are meant for machine knitting, they can also be used for hand knitting and crochet. And Knit Works offers classes if you fancy learning something new during your trip.

Sharp Works

If you have a visit to Brixton planned, better put Sharp Works on your list, too. The shop stocks wonderful yarns from brands like Rowan, Katia, Noro, Adriafill and Hoooked. And you’ll be able to sign up for knitting and crochet classes. If you’re into ribbons and other colourful haberdashery, Sharp Works is your shop.

The Handweaver’s Studio

If you’re into spinning and weaving, The Handweaver’s studio, near Finsbury park, is wonderful to visit. It’s mainly a shop for weavers, spinners, felters, dyers and embroiderers, but don’t worry, this is also a proper wool shop in London. And if you ever would like to start dying your own yarn, here’s the place to buy yarn.

Haberdashery shops London

Cloth House London

Okay, if you’re searching for a bit more than just wool shops in London, and you’re into sewing or quilting or another textile craft (or simply love browsing through buttons, which is oddly relaxing), better make an appointment at Cloth House London. I used to visit the one in Soho, which unfortunately closed its doors. But it’s still the very best experience, as you’ll still find the most amazing notions there, as well as vintage fabrics, ribbons and buttons.

MacCculloch & Wallace

MacCulloch & Wallace are simply the best of the best when it comes to wool shop and haberdashery shops in London. They have everything a textile crafter could hope for. Most of the two-story floor is filled with wonderful fabrics, but there is also an amazing collection of ribbons, trimmings, notions, buttons and yarn. It’s a real delight to visit.

Fabrics Galore

With a name like that you immediately feel like visiting, right? Fabrics Galore is a dream, with their Battersea shop selling everything you could possibly need for dressmaking, quilting or other fabric related crafts. You’ll find fabrics by Cath Kidston, Liberty and Orla Kiely as well as a reduced section.

Dalston Mill Fabrics

Dalston Mill Fabrics, in the east of London, opened its doors 40 years ago and it looks a bit like a market stall. But it’s really an Aladdin’s Cave for fabrics and notions. From bridal fabrics to craft fabrics, it’s all there. This shop definitely is one of hte most interesting to visit during your time in London.
