by Esther | Happy in Red

Lisbon seems to have walked away from a colourful picturebook and a visit to the Portuguese capital is a joy for all your senses. Enjoy the colourful azulejos (the traditional Portuguese tiles), listen to the ding-ding-ding of the iconic yellow tram 28 snaking its way through the Alfama district whilst fado seeps through the walls of the historical houses and savoury the cruch of puff pastry followed by the softness of custard in the amazing Pasteis de Belém. Portugal won’t dissapoint, promise. I have listed some lovely things to do in Lisbon and for us creative souls (please scroll on) to read about the most beautiful wool shops in Lisbon.

Boemio FLH

The colourful and fun Boemio FLH is set in a beautiful historical building in the heart of Lisbon, you’ll have all the top sites at hand. The hotel has a vintage feel to it, yet is still rather fresh and new. I adore all flowery wallpaper in the common areas, as well as the warm colours and fun lamps in teh room. In the evening, you can enjoy a stylish cocktail at the bar.

Top things to do in Lisabon

Alfama

Top things to do in Lisbon, Alfama

Top things to do in Lisbon, Sé de Lisboa

Alfama is Lisbon’s oldest neighbourhood and is still the soul of the city. Visigoths already inhabited Alfama in the 5th century, though a couple of centuries later the Moors gave it the character it still holds today. Traditionally, it was a fishermen’s neighbourhood and it certainly has a bit of a village feel. The top sights in Alfama are basically also the top thins to do in Lisbon. Go see the Sé de Lisboa and Castelo de São Jorge, have coffee at one of the amazing view points (mine is Miradouro da Graça) and don’t forget to catch a Fado show.

Bike tour Lisbon

Top things to do in Lisbon, Lisbon bike tour

If you’re only in Lisbon for a couple of days one of the top things to do in Lisbon is join a bike tour. You’ll explore the highlights of the city over the course of three hours by e-bike, which is a vert relaxed way to see Lisbon. These bikes are easy to use and you’ll be provided with a helmet. A knowledgeable will tell you some interesting things about Lisbon’s history and all the things you see during your tour. Obvioulsy, there’s enough time to take lots of photos.

Top things to do in Lisbon, Torre de Belem

Top things to do in Lisbon, Padrão dos Descobrimentos

Mosteiro dos Jerónimos

Pasteis de Belem

If there is one place I could visit in Lisbon it would be, without a doubt, Belém. Set along the Tagus river doesn’t only bring refreshing salty sea air, but also the most amazing historical monuments to be found in Europe, making the Age of Discoveries come to life right before your eyes. Of course the Torre de Belem is to be visited, along with the Padrão dos Descobrimentos. The latter is the monument of discoveries where you’ll see Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and 30 more great explorers. But whatever you do, schedule in some time to see the UNESCO listed Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, one of the greatest monasteries you’ll ever see, and the grave of Vasco da Gama in the adjecent church. And after all that sightseeing you deserve to treat yourself to Portugal’s finest pastry, a custard tard. Because the best ‘pasteis de nata’ are to be had at the bakery of Pasteis de Belem almost next to the monastery. There may be a line, but it’ll be worth the wait.

LX Factory

Foto by LX Factory

Foto by LX Factory

To mix things up a bit, I’d really recommend visiting Lisbon’s hippest place to be, next to all the historical things you’ll see. LX factory is a 19th century industrial site, perched under the iconic red bridge of the city. It has been transformed into a bustling place full of cool shops, galeries, street art bars and restaurants. It’s perfectly combined with a visit to Belém and it’s best to visit at the end of the afternoon or in the (early) evening when the place really comes to life.

A day trip to Sintra

Sintra, Portugal

Sintra Pena Palace

Quinta da Regaleira

I honestly believe Sintra has actually been a page ripped out of a fairytale book. It certainly is one of the most enchanting places in Portugal and it’s just a stone’s throw away from Lisbon. It’s the perfect day trip destination (though I highly recommend staying overnight). This beautiful town was already inhabited by the Moors, who built an impressive castle there, but things really started to kick off when Portuguese jet set started to build houses and palaces in the wooded hills there from the 18th century onwards. Most famous is the brightly coloured Pena Palaca, though I highly recommend visiting Palacio e Parque de Monserrate and the mysterious Quinta da Regaleira. You can easily hop on a train from Lisbon to Sintra, though prebooking a day trip is just as easy when you’re pressed for time.

Wool shops in Lisbon, Portugal

When visiting wool shops in Lisbon, I highly recommend using your Lisboa Card, as it grants you free access to all public transport in the city. Some wool shops in Lisbon are in or near the city center, while others need a trip by metro or tram. Public transport is really well-organised in Lisbon, so you’ll have no trouble finding your way around. Do check the opening times of the wool shops in Lisbon, preventing you from showing up to a closed door.

Retrosaria

Wool shops in Lisbon, photo by Retrosaria

Retrosaria is one of the loveliest wool shops in Lisbon and is found in the old heart of the city. It’s located in a beautiful old building and the wool is displayed in lovely wooden cabinets. Retrosaria mostly sells Portuguese yarns, so it’s a great opportunity to get your hands on something unfamiliar. But you can also buy fabrics and handmade Portuguese leather shoes and boots there. This shop is simply a wonderful experience.

If you’re looking for wool shops in Lisbon, you simply have to visit Traça Trapos Lisboa. It’s simply a gorgeous shop and it’s set not too far from LX Factory or Belém, so it’s easily combined with a visit to the top things to see in Lisbon. Traça Trapos is simply a wonderful wool shop in Lisbon, carrying Portuguese brands, but also well-known brands like Drops. If you’re into macrame, Traça Trapos is the shop for you as it carries yarn especially for macrame and making wall tapestry.

Welcome Yarn

To visit Welcome Yarn you’ll have to travel a bit more outside the city center, but if you’re into recycled yarn and eco-friendly yarns, this is the place for you. Welcome Yarn is one of the nicest wool shops in Lisbon and carries their own brand of recycled yarns, especially cotton yarns and t-shirt yarns perfect for crochet, tapestry and macrame. No matter what colour you’re after, they’ll have it at Welcome Yarn.

PraKriar

PraKriar is more of a fabric shop, a bueautiful one at that, perfect for dressmakers and quilters alike. Loads of fabrics and notions, but there’s also a small selection or yarn. A great visit if you’re more of an allround crafter that just a knitter or crocheter.

A Vida Portuguese

Foto met dank aan A Vida Portuguese

A vida Portuguese is not actually a wool shop or a craft shop, but it’s such an amazing place that I do feel you actually have to visit. This shop offers the best handmade items you can find in Portugal. From handwoven scarves, wraps and blankets, to stationary, toileteries and clothes. And when I visited, there was a small selection of Portuguese yarn available. All handdyed. Absolutely stunning.

Echt prachtig.
