If there is one creative city in Europe that I think you should visit, it’s Cologne. Hands down. Since the city isn’t too far a trip from The Netherlands I have visited the city numerous times and every time I discover new colourful places to eat, sleep and shop (read: craft). I have bundled all these lovely places into this creative travel guide Cologne and I hope you’ll enjoy it.
Als er toch één creatieve stad is die je echt zou moeten bezoeken, dan is het toch wel Keulen. Omdat je er eigenlijk zo bent vanuit Nederland (en vanuit Utrecht waar ik woon, gaat het helemaal snel) ben ik er al een paar keer geweest. Voor de lol en voor het werk. En telkens ontdek ik weer nieuwe creatieve kleurrijke plekken om te slapen, eten en (wol te) shoppen. - It’s possible to fly directly to Cologne, especially from European destinations there are cheap flights to Cologne aplenty.
- If you book a flight to another destination in Germany, simply hop on a train to Cologne. As it’s an inyercity destination, loads of (fast) trains go there every day from all destinations within Germany and many destinations within Europe.
- There are many great hotels in Cologne, I am listing a few of my favourites below.
- During your stay it’s the best idea to have the Köln Card with you. This city pass grants you discounts on most sights in town and you can use all public transport for free during your stay.
Plan je creatieve stedentrip Keulen
- Je reist het gemakkelijkst met de trein naar Keulen. Je stapt in het hartje van de stad uit, letterlijk middenin het centrum.
- Ga je toch liever met de auto naar Keulen, kies dan voor een hotel met parkeerplaats. Dat scheelt je (hoge) parkeerkosten. Je hebt ook een milieuvignet nodig als je naar Keulen gaat met de auto. Deze koop je bijvoorbeeld bij de ANWB.

Fun hotels in Cologne
Tante Alma’s Hotel
Tante Alma’s Hotel is simply The Best Choice for creative crochet fanatics like ourselves. This hotel is super cosy and… there is crochet and vintage everywhere. Crochet blankets, granny squares, crochet pillow, doilies. You name it. The rooms and very comfortable and outfitted with loads of crochet and vintage, but the communal living room is also anawesome place to curl up and work on some crochet or knitting of your own.
Tante Alma’s Hotel is simpelweg het allerbeste hotel in Keulen (en misschien wel in heel Duitsland!) om te verblijven als je houdt van haken en vintage. Want in werkelijk het hele hotel is haakwerk te vinden. Geweldig. Gehaakte dekens, granny squares, gehaakte kussen, kleedjes. Je zou bijna vergeten dat het ook nog eens gewoon een heel fijn hotel is om te verblijven. Met fijne comfortabele kamers, met leuke gehaakte en vintage spulletjes overal. En de gemeenschappelijke woonkamer is de perfecte plek om neer te ploffen en zelf aan een haakwerkje of breiwerkje te beginnen.
25hours Hotel The Circle
25hours Hotel The Circle is one of the most fun and most colourful of all hotels in Cologne, situated on the edge of the city centre. Close enough to all the sights, yet away from the crowds. The hotel has spacious, fun and colourful rooms full of fun retro gadgets. There is a rooftop bar with excellent view over the city and a nice restaurant, in case you don’t feel like venturing out after a day of sightseeing.
Het 25hours Hotel The Circle is één van de leukste en meest kleurrijke hotels van Keulen. Gelegen aan de rand van het centrum. Op korte afstand van de meeste bezienswaardigheden, maar ver genoeg weg van drukte en gedruis. De kamers van het hotel zijn ruim, leuk en kleurrijk vol met grappige retro details. Er is een rooftop bar met prachtig uitzicht over de stad en een goed restaurant, voor het geval je ‘s avonds echt geen zin meer hebt om de deur uit te gaan.
Top things to do in Cologne
Kölner Dom
The Kölner Dom is the icon of Cologne, and it was the largest building in Europe until Gustav Eiffel built the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The cathedral is a giant indeed and well worth the visit. The interior is surprisingly airy for such a large gothic building and the glas stained windows are stunning. Climb the 533 steps of the south tower for an amazing view over the city.
De Dom van Keulen is natuurlijk dé trekpleister van de stad, hét icoon van Keulen. Tot de bouw van de Eiffeltoren was de kathedraal zelfs het hoogste gebouw van Europa. Binnen is het verrassend ruim en licht, dat zou je niet verwachten van zo’n gigantisch gotisch gebouw. Trotseer de 533 treden van de zuidelijke toren van de Dom, want boven heb je een schitterend uitzicht over de stad.
Cologne by bike
I love discovering a city by bike. It’s a great way to see a lot of sights in s short time, see some sights that are a little more further afield and get some insight from a guide. I really recommend taking this guided bike tour in Cologne. In three hours a guide tells you all about the very interesting history of the city and you’ll get to know all the most important sights of the city. If you’d rather explore by yourself, simply rent a bike.
Ik vind het geweldig om een stad op de fiets te leren kennen. Je kunt binnen een paar uur de mooiste bezienswaardigheden van een stad zien, je komt alles te weten van een kundige gids of ziet juist die buurtjes die de meeste bezoekers niet kunnen zien. De highlights tour van Keulen is een echte aanrader. In een paar uur fiets je met een gids langs de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden in Keulen en kom je alles te weten over de interessante geschiedenis van de stad. Liever op eigen gelegenheid op pad? Een fiets huren kan ook en is helemaal niet duur.
Old town of Cologne
The Old Town of Cologne is such a gem. Rustic narrow streets, traditional old houses, classic breweries and the banks of the Rhine. It’s no wonder most visitors immediately flock to the old town, after arriving in Cologne. Take a stroll along the Rhine river, have a ‘Kölsch’ in one of the breweries and visit the Romanesque church of St. Martin. Along the banks of the Rhine River the Chocolate Museum, by Lindt, is a very fun visit. It takes you through the production process of chocolate and of course, some tasting is in order.
De Altstadt van Keulen is een plaatje. Met smalle, rustieke straatjes en kleurrijke historische huisjes, traditionele brouwerijen en natuurlijk de oevers van de Rijn. Het is geen wonder dat de meeste bezoekers meteen richting de Altstadt wandelen als ze aankomen in Keulen. Wandel langs de rivier, proef een traditioneel glas ‘Kölsch’ and bezoek de St. Martin’s kerk. Als je langs de Rijn wandelt, kom je vanzelf het Chocolademuseum van Lindt tegen. Heel leuk om te bezoeken. Je leert er alles over het produceren van chocolade, en natuurlijk moet er ook geproefd worden.
Hohenzollern Brücke
The Hohenzollern Bridge was built at the beginning of the last century and actually consists of three bridges into one: a passenger bridge, tram bridge and train bridge. It was heavily damaged during the Second Word War, but was succesfully rebuilt. The Hohenzollern Bridge is densely hung with love locks. Walk from the old town over the bridge to the Rheinpark where you can go for a nice walk, visit a spa or the Cologne Zoo.
De Hohenzollern Brücke werd aan het begin van de vorige eeuw gebouwd en bestaat eigenlijk uit drie bruggen: een voetgangersbrug, trambrug en treinbrug. Tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd de brug flink beschadigd, maar is daarna weer herbouwd. De Hohenzollern Brücke staat vooral bekend vanwege de duizenden slotjes die eraan hangen. Wandel vanaf de Altstadt over de brug om ze te bewonderen en om aan de overkant van de brug in het Rheinpark te wandelen, te genieten van een middagje wellness of naar de Kölner Zoo te gaan.
Belgisches Viertel
The Belgian Quarter, Das Belgisches Viertel in German, is my favourite neighbourhood in Cologne. It’s not too far from the city centre, simply take the subway to Rudolphsplatz using your Köln Card. All streetnames in the neighbourhood are named after Dutch or Belgian cities, so they can be easily recognised. The neighbourhood is filled with creative shops, fabulous vintage boutiques and colourful cafés. It’s safe, lively and fun. I think you should definitely have cake and coffee at Café Fleur and lunch or drinks at Herr Pimock.
Het Belgisches Viertel is mijn favoriete wijk in Keulen. Het is niet al te ver van het centrum. Neem gewoon de metronaar Rudolphsplatz, met je Köln Card. Alle straatnamen in het Belgisches Viertel zijn vernoemd naar Nederlandse of Belgische steden en zijn dus gemakkelijk te herkennen. Het buurtje ziy tjokvol creatieve winkeltjes, leuke vintage zaken, fijne boetieks en vrolijke cafés. Het is een veilig en levendig buurtje. Wat mij betreft moet je aan de koffie met taart bij Café Fleur en ‘s middags lunchen of borrelen bij Herr Pimock.
Creative hotspots in Cologne
Lauras Wolladen
Lauras Wolladen is a woolshop situated in the colourful and funky neighbourhood of Cologne Ehrenfeld, a neighbourhood full of fun vintage shops, independant boutiques and great cafés. It’s worth the trip from the city centre, simply use your Köln Card for public transport. The wool shop is sutuated in a beautiful old building and sells amazing yarns, by Lana Gross and Lang, but also by Lala Berlin. A fun German brand that’s worth the try. If you don’t feel like going all this way, there is a branch in the city centre at Schwertnergasse 1.
Lauras Wolladen is een wolwinkel in Keulen, in de kleurrijke wijk Ehrenfeld. Dit buurtje zit boordevol leuke vintage winkels, onafhankelijke boetieks en gezellige cafeetjes. Het is sowieso leuk om de wijk te ontdekken en dat is ook goed te doen met het openbaar vervoer, bijvoorbeeld met je Köln Card. De wolwinkel is gevestigd in een mooi, historisch pand en zit tjokvol wol van mooie merken, zoals Lang en Lana Grossa, maar ook het Duitse merk Lala Berlin. Dat merk heeft heel vrolijke garens en moet je echt eens proberen. Mocht je nog geen zin of tijd hebben om helemaal die kant op te gaan, in het centrum van Keulen vind je een filiaal aan Schwertnergasse 1.
Wolle Rödel
I got acquainted with Idee. when I visited Berlin. It’s a department store for crafters. Seriously, how brilliant is that. Whether you’re into painting, macramé pr paper art, you’ll find all your supplies there. It’s a hip and happening place and it shows in the prices, but it’s just such a glorious place. I fell you simply have to see you for yourself. Wolle Rödel is the wool shop inside Idee. and doesn’t only sell yarn, but also loads of knitting and crochet kits as well as patterns and pattern book. Even if you don’t buy anything, you’ll leave the store inspired.
Ik maakte al eens kennis met Idee. toen ik in Berlijn was en sindsdien check ik elke Duitse stad op een Idee. Dit is namelijk een creatief warenhuis. Wat een geweldig idee! Het maakte niet uit of je houdt van schilderen, macramé of papier. Je vindt al je benodigdheden op één plek. Het is een hippe winkel, en dar is ook wel aan de prijzen te zien. Maar het is toch wel heel leuk om er even langs te gaan. Wolle Rödel is de wolwinkel die in Idee. is gevestigd en hier koop je niet alleen maar garens, maar ook een heleboel haak- of breipakketten en losse patronen of patroonboeken. Zelfs al koop je er helemaal niets, je loopt toch naar buiten met een heleboel ideeën en inspiratie.
Garnstore
Garnstore is a wool shop in Cologne in the city centre, easy to visit. The wool shop sells special brand, often hand dyed yarns. They import yarn from all around the world. Brands like Baa Ram Ewe and Hedgehog fibres can be found here.
Garnstore is een wolwinkel in het centrum van Keulen, dus daar wandel je zo naartoe. Dit is je adresje voor heel bijzondere, vaak handgeverfde garens. Er worden merken van over de hele wereld geïmporteerd, zoals Baa Ram Ewe en Hedgehog fibres.
Stoff & Stil
Stoff & Stil is a maker’s walhalla, as this grand department store has the best fabric notions and yarn, as well as patterns, guide books and loads of creative ideas. The store is located in the city centre of Cologne, so you may as well pop by whilst you’re enjoying all the other sights of the city.
Stoff & Stil is echt een walhalla voor creatievelingen. In dit creatieve warenhuis vind je kilometers stoffen, geweldige fournituren en ook garens. Je kunt er superveel ideeën opdoen en patronen kopen. De winkel ligt in het centrum van de stad, dus je wipt er gemakkelijk even naar binnen als je de rest van de bezienswaardigheden in Keulen aan het bekijken bent.
Schee
If you’re into graphic design, wander into the Belgian quarter and visit Schee. You’ll find the most amazing posters, postcards and notebooks. But also loads of things to colour up your house, like pretty plant pots, cups and saucers, pillows and blankets.
Als je van grafisch design houdt, moet je echt naar Schee in het Belgisches Viertel. Hier vind je de mooiste posters, kaarten, notitieboekjes en andere papierwaren. Maar je vindt er ook alles om je huis mooier en kleurrijker te maken, zoals bloempotten, serviesgoed, kussens en deken.
Fraukayser
Another not-so-hidden-gem in the Belgian Quarter is Fraukayser. The owner started out selling pillows and tea towels embroidered with fun graphics, but now her store is the place to find the most beautiful paper lamps, mobiles and postcards.
Nog een leuke parel in het Belgisches Viertel is Fraukayser. De eigenaresse startte haar winkel met de verkoop van kussens, theedoelen en schorten met daarop leuke teksten en graphics geborduurd. Maar inmiddels kun je er terecht voor zo veel meer leuks, zoals papieren lampen, mobielen en papierwaren.
