It’s a little strange really. I absolutely love the south of Europe and over the last couple of years, I have been to Portugal, Spain and Greece many times. Heck, I even visited Serbia. But Italy never seemed to fit in with my plans, somehow. I guess I can’t be everywhere at once. But coming back from our holiday on Malta, my husband and I decided to spend a few days in Bologna, in the north of Italy. Just because we could and because we really wanted to spend some time in Italy. And guess what, it was a great city and we enjoyed ourselves to bit. So, I’ve come up with a travel guide Bologna and hope you’ll enjoy it.
Eigenlijk is het vreemd. Ik ben dol op Zuid-Europa en reisde in de afgelopen jaren veel naar Portugal, Spanje en Griekenland. Ik ging zelfs richting Servië. Maar Italië liet ik een beetje links liggen. Niet bewust trouwens, je kunt immers niet overal tegelijk zijn. Maar op terugweg van een vakantie op Malta besloten mijn man en ik via Bologna naar huis te vliegen, gewoon omdat het kon. En omdat we toch eens wat meer van Italië wilden zien. En Bologna was geweldig! Daarom maakte ik een leuke, nieuwe creatieve reisgids Bologna. Ik hoop dat je ‘m leuk vindt.

- There are plenty of cheap flights to Bologna. Directs flight depart from a lot of European cities. If you’re flying in from overseas, you will like change planes in Rome.

Dopa
Now Dopa is such a creative and fun place that it should be really on my list. The hotel isn’t expensive at all, yet it has very nice looking rooms that are creatively decorated. There’s a fine breakfast and the atmosphere is great.
Dopa valt voor mij echt onder de creatieve adresjes in Bologna. Helemaal niet duur en je kunt er ontzettend leuk logeren in een origineel ingerichte kamer. Je kunt lekker ontbijten in het hotel en de sfeer is goed.
Phi Hotel Bologna
Meet the Phi Hotel Bologna, dating from 1375 and the oldest boutique hotel in town! And a stunner it is. The Hotel has, of course, been modernised since opening. Whether you’re staying in one of the colourful apartments or one of the double room, you’ll always stay somewhere original as all rooms and apartments are decorated differently with funky wallpaper or cool mural paintings. The hotel is located in the heart of Bologna.
Het Phi Hotel Bologna stamt uit 1375 en is daarmee het oudste boutique hotel in de stad. Sfeer is dus gegarandeerd. Het hotel is wel met zijn tijd meegegaan. Of je nu in één van de kleurrijke appartementen verblijft of één van de hotelkamers: ze zijn allemaal anders ingericht, met vrolijk behang of toffe schilderingen op de muur. Het hotel ligt in het centrum van de stad.

Towers of Bologna
Once upon a time the rich and important in Bologna showed exactly how rich and important they were by erecting large towers. Well, time had a different opinion about it and now only two huge towers remain in the heart of the city. The Due Tori, as they are called, are 48 meters and 92 meters high and you can climb to the top of the largest one. Which you should! You’re granted an exceptional view over the city and the entire region.
Ooit lieten de rijken van Bologna zien hoeveel geld en macht ze wel niet hadden door flinke torens neer te zetten. De tand des tijds had er een andere mening over en nu staan er nog twee flinke torens trots overeind. De Due Tori zijn respectievelijk 48 en 92 meter hoog en het hoogste exemplaar kun je ook beklimmen. En dat moet je ook doen voor een prachtig uitzicht over de stad en de omgeving.
Eating at the market
Going to the market in Bologna is actually more like discovering a large part of the old town, as the market of Bologna is open air, consisting of shops displaying their good both outside and inside. On and around Via Pescherie Vecchie, Via Drapperie and Via degli Orefici you can buy the best of the best when it comes to cheeses, fresh pastas, meat, fish and vegetables. Stop at one of the restaurants scattered among the market and you’ll be eating like a king. Bologna is called La Grossa (the fat one) for a reason. Another colourful market is the Mercato della Erbe where you see mountains of fresh vegetables, fruit, herbs and mushrooms. The market stalls are surrounded by a couple of restaurants offering amazing food.
De markt van Bologna ontdekken is eigenlijk zo veel als gewoon door het oude centrum dwalen. De markt is namelijk een aaneenschakeling van straatjes waar winkeliers hun waren zowel binnen als buiten tentoon spreiden. Op en rondom de Via Pescherie Vecchie, Via Drapperie en Via degli Orefici vind je de mooiste kazen, verse pasta’s, vleeswaren, lokale wijnen en vis. Plof rond lunchtijd neer bij één van de restaurantjes in één van deze straten en je eet als een koning. Bologna heeft niet voor niets als bijnaam La Grossa (de vette). Een andere leuke markt is Mercato della Erbe, de oude overdekte versmarkt waar groente, fruit, kruiden en paddenstoelen hoog liggen opgetast. Een prachtig gezicht. In de markt vind je ook een aantal geweldige restaurantjes om te lunchen.
Bologna by bike
One of the best ways to discover the city is to see Bologna by bike. The city is extremely bike-friendly and most locals get around by bike, daily. There are cycle paths everywhere and the traffic is used to all the cyclists. If you join this guided bike tour you’ll discover all the highlights of Bologna, as well as some interesting hidden gems.

Santuario di Madonna di San Luca
The Sanctuary of Madonna sits on top of the Monte della Guardia just outisde of town, but can be reached from the city centre. From Porta Saragozza walk under the 666 porticoes up to the baroque church, it’s considered to be quite the pilgrimage but worth the walk. From the top, you’ll have an amazing view over the city.
De Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca is een bijzondere basiliek op een heuvel, net buiten het centrum van Bologna. Maar je kunt er wel op een heel bijzondere manier naartoe wandelen. Vanaf Porta Saragozza wandel je onder 666 bogen door naar boven. Dit is een echte bedevaartroute. Eenmaal boven kun je de bijzondere barokke kerk bewonderen en vanaf de top van de kerk genieten van het prachtige uitzicht.
Abbazia di Santo Stefano
Abbazia di Santo Stefano is actually one of my favourite sights in Bologna. It’s considered to be one church, but actually it’s 7 seperate churches, mazed together. The churches were all built in different era en have completely different architecture and styles. Its such fun discovering all the different cryps, altars and chapels.
De Abbazia di Santo Stefano is misschien wel de leukste bezienswaardigheid in Bologna. Dit wordt als één kerk gerekend, maar eigenlijk zijn het 7 verschillende kerken die met elkaar zijn verbonden. Ze zijn allemaal in een ander tijdperk gebouwd en dat is goed te zien aan de bouwstijlen en inrichten. Het is leuk om te verdwalen in het labyrint van kappellen, cryptes en altaars.
Creative hotspots in Bologna
Il Filarino
First of all there’s Il Filarino, a bit of a trek outside the city centre. Well worth the walk, but do check openings hours before you get there and they’ve just closed for the afternoon. It’s Italy after all. The shop is light and pretty, with nice yarns stacked in wooden crates.
Allereerst is daar Il Filarino, een flink eindje uit het centrum (check de openingstijdens, anders loop je voor niets), maar het is de wandeling of de fietstocht waard. Het is een frisse en lieve winkel, met prachtige bollen in houten kratjes opgestapeld. En de eigenaresse houdt ook erg van haken. Genoeg inspiratie, dus.
Casa Della Lana Di Samoggia Franca
In the centre of Bologna is Casa Della Lana Di Samoggia Franca. It doesn’t have a website, but you can find it on Via Righi Augusto. The shop has a good selection of yarn, finished handmade items and haberdashery. It does come across as a little dated, but the selection of yarn is quite good and this shop is a good stop if you’d like to go yarn shopping, but you don’t feel like leaving the city centre.
In het centrum van Bologna vind je Casa Della Lana Di Samoggia Franca. De winkel heeft geen website, maar je kunt hem vinden aan de Via Righi Augusto. Het is een zaak met handgemaakt kleding, een flinke hoeveelheid wol en fournituren. De winkel komt een beetje ouderwets over, maar heeft wel veel keuze en de wol is van goede kwaliteit. Een leuke winkel als je wilt wolwinkelen in Bologna, maar geen zin hebt om het centrum uit de gaan.
Atelier della Lana
And then my favourite, Atelier della Lana, the shop where I bought the yarn for my crochet zig zag shawl. A 5-minute walk from the city centre. And it’s a real must-visit. The owner is so friendly and has a lovely collection, a mix of Italian brands and some more well-known international brands. She has both knitted and crocheted examples and samples, which is lovely. This shop closes in the afternoon, so please plan your visit accordingly.
En dan mijn favoriet, Atelier della Lana, de winkel waar ik de wol voor mijn zig zag sjaal kocht. Een kleine 5 minuten wandelen vanaf het hart van de stad en wat mijn betreft echt een must-visit. De eigenaresse is heel vriendelijk en heeft een heel leuke collectie, met Italiaanse merken, maar ook wat bekende merken (voor ons dan) er tussen. Een frisse collectie, met zowel gehaakte als gebreide voorbeelden, wat ik superfijn vond. Deze winkel gaat tussen de middag dicht, dus daar moet je even rekening mee houden.
Pappare’
After all that sightseeing and wool shopping I guess you could use a refreshment or two, so I though I’d share my favourite address in Bologna for doing so. No, it’s not traditional (you can find those places yourself), but Pappare’ is the place for breakfast, brunch, lunch or drinks. The coffee is excellent and so are the sandwiches, French toast and pastries. If you grab a sea outside, you’ll have a prefect view over the towers of Bologna.
Als je de hele dag bezienswaardigheden hebt bekeken en wol hebt geshopt, ben je wel toe aan een versnapering. Dus deel ik één van mijn favoriete plekken met je. Nee, dit is geen traditionele plek. Die kun je zelf ook goed vinden in Bologna. Maar Pappare’ is wat mij betreft dé plek voor ontbijt, brunch, lunch of een drankje. De koffie is er geweldig, net als de broodjes, wentelteefjes en gebakjes. Bemachtig één van de tafeltjes buiten, dan heb je mooi uitzicht op de torens van Bologna.
