Clasp clutch sewing pattern

On a shopping spree in Brussels, I bought a clasp frame for a purse. I have a bit of a weak spot for clasped purses and clutches. My grandmother had several hidden in her drawers. Those leather clasp clutches belonged to my grandfather. I guess in those days you didn’t have all kinds of bank and Paypal accounts, so all these different leather purses were his ‘jam jars’. Funny thing is that all these purses had different colours and sizes, so my grandfather probably immediately saw in which purse was what. I really wanted to make my own clasp clutch, but how? I figured out a clasp clutch sewing pattern, took lots of photos on the way. So, now you can enjoy my free tutorial and make your own clasp clutch.

In Brussel kocht ik een paar jaar geleden een frame voor een beursje. Ik heb een zwak voor dit soort beursjes. Mijn oma had een heleboel beursjes in een lade liggen, ze waren ooit van mijn opa. Vroeger ging natuurlijk nog niet alles via de bank of Paypal, dus mijn opa had voor zijn fietsenwinkel verschillende ‘potjes’ in de vorm van beursjes. Het leuke is dat deze ook allemaal een andere vorm en maat hadden. Dan wist hij precies waar de beurs voor was. Ik wilde zelf ook een beursje naaien. Maar ik moest zelf even met een naaipatroon op de proppen komen. Dat is er nu, met deze stap voor stap uitleg maak jij ook je eigen beursje.

Clasp clutch: what you need

• First of all: a frame. Choose a clasp that you can sew onto your fabric. Check out a selection of clasp frames.
• Two pieces of about 30 x 30 cm (depending on how large you wanna make your purse), two different prints.
• Embroidery thread in a matching colour to the print of your outer fabric.
• Matching thread.
• Optional: some fusible interfacing.
• Your sewing kit.

Naaipatroon beursje: dit heb je nodig

• Een frame, kies er één die je aan je stof kunt vastnaaien.
• Twee lappen stof, van ongeveer 30 x 30 cm, in verschillende prints.
• Borduurgaren dat bij je stof past.
• Optioneel: vlieseline.
• You standaard naai-uitrusting.

Clasp clutch sewing pattern: step by step tutorial

Draw your pattern

• Put the frame on a white sheet of paper and trace the top with a pencil. Mark the pivot points with a fat dot or an x.
• Tilt the side of the frame about 45 degrees to the outside and mark the pivot point with an x again.
• Now, your purse needs space: you’ll be able to open it and you’ll want to be able to take things in and out of it. That’s why you need to draw some space near the pivot points.
• Connect the outer dot on the side to the top of the pattern following the line and shape of the frame.
• After you’re done with the top, you can decide what the rest of your purse is going to look like. Everything that’s happening under the dots is basically up to you: straight, round, square. Whatever you like.
• Draw 7 mm-1 cm around your pattern for seam allowance.
• The left and right side of the pattern should be equal. I drew the middle of my pattern and drew the right side using the left side after I cut it.

Teken je patroon

• Leg je frame op een vel wit papier en trek de bovenkant om met potlood. Markeer de plek van de scharnierpunten met een dikke stip of een sterretje.
• Kantel het frame 45 graden naar buiten en zet daar weer een stip.
• Je clutch heeft ruimte nodig om open en dicht te gaan én je wilt er natuurlijk wat in kunnen doen. Vandaar dat je je clutch bij de scharnierpunten ruimte geeft.
• Verbind de buitenste stip met de bovenkant van het patroon, waarbij je de vloeiende lijn van de vorm van je frame volgt.
• Als je de bovenkant hebt gedaan, kun je bepalen hoe de onderkant van je clutch eruit komt te zien. Alles wat je onder de puntjes doet, mag je lekker zelf weten: recht, rond, driehoekig, vierkant. Leef je uit!
• Teken ongeveer 7 mm/ 1 cm rond het patroon als naadwaarde (ik gebruik de breedte van mijn naaivoetje).
• Beide zijdes moeten wel gelijk zijn. Als je het midden bepaalt van je patroon kun je het aan de andere kant precies overtrekken bij het uitknippen. 

Cut your fabric

Use your paper template to cut 2 pieces from your outside fabric and 2 from your lining fabric. To give your purse a little more body, you could iron in some interfacing on the wrong sides of your outer fabric pieces.

Knip je stof

Gebruik je papieren template om twee stuks uit je buitenstof en twee stuks uit je voeringstof te knippen. Om je tasje wat steviger te maken, kun je wat vlieseline aan de verkeerde kant van je buitenstof strijken.

Sewing the outer bag and lining

• Take the fabric for your outer bag.
• Put the pattern pieces on top of each other, right sides facing and pin.
• Take your template and put it on top of your fabric. Draw the points of the pivot point on the fabric. Do this on both sides.
• Start your stitching at one pivot point and go along the bottom to the other pivot point. Don’t go beyond it!
• Zigzag from one pivot point along the bottom to the other pivot point.
• Repeat these steps for the lining pieces, but leave a 3-4 cm turning gap in the bottom.

De binnentas en voering naaien

• Neem de stofdelen van je buitentas.
• Leg de twee patroondelen van buitenstof met de goede kanten tegen elkaar en speld goed vast.
• Pak je template er nog even bij en zet een streepje op de stof bij de scharnierpunten. Doe dit aan beide kanten.
• Begin met stikken bij het ene scharnierpunt en stik onderlangs tot aan het andere scharnierpunt. Niet verder!
• Zigzag nu van het ene scharnierpunt onderlangs naar het andere scharnierpunt.
• Herhaal deze stappen voor de voering, maar laat zo’n 3-4 cm in de onderkant open, dit wordt het keergat.

Attach the outside to the inside

• Turn the lining piece rights side out and poke out all the corners and seams.
• Put the lining piece into the outer piece, so the right sides are together.
• Pin the tops of both the front and back of the purse. make sure the pivot points match up.
• Stitch the tops of the front and back.
• I wasn’t able to reach the pivot points with my sewing machine. So I used a hand-sewing needle to sew the last bit together. It’s not a bad thing anyway, because I’d really recommend to hand-stitch the lining and outer fabric on the pivot points, as it’s really important these points are strongly secured.

De binnenkant aan de buitenkant vastmaken

• Keer de voeringdelen binnenstebuiten (zodat de mooie kant van de stof aan de buitenkant zit) en duw alle naden goed naar buiten.
• Stop het voeringdeel in het buitendeel, zodat de goede kanten tegen elkaar aan zitten.
• Pin de bovenkanten aan de voor- en achterkant goed vast en zorg dat de scharnierpunten van de voering en buitenkant goed tegen elkaar aanzitten.
• Stik de bovenkant (voor en achter) aan elkaar.
• Het lukte mij niet om helemaal tot aan de scharnierpunten te komen met mijn machine, dus ik naaide het laatste eindje met de hand. Niet erg, want het is verstandig om op het scharnierpunt de voering and buitenstof met een aantal steken even stevig vast te zetten.

Turn your purse inside out

• Turn the purse inside out by pulling the outer bag through the turning gap in the lining.
• Push out all the seams and corners of both the outer bag and the lining.
• After that, close the turning gap using a very small zigzag stitch or using a hand sewing needle and a blind stitch.
• Put the lining into the outer bag and make sure all the seams look nice and smooth. Press the purse with your iron.

Draai je tasje binnenstebuiten

• Keer je tasje binnenstebuiten door de buitenkant door het keergat heen te trekken.
• Duw de naden en hoeken van zowel de binnentas als de voering goed naar buiten.
• Sluit het keergat met een kleine zigzagsteek of naai het met de hand dicht met een blinde steek.
• Stop nu de voering in het buitentasje. Zorg dat alle naden er een beetje netjes uit zien en strijk het tasje nog even goed plat. 

Sew the purse into the frame

• This is the toughest part of this clasp clutch sewing pattern, so make sure to take your time.
• Take your hand sewing needle, embroidery thread and frame.
• Cut off a long string of embroidery thread and make a tiny knot in one of the ends.
• Fold your purse in half lengthwise so you’ll determine the middle.
• Poke your needle in the top middle of the lining and push your needle through the seam.
• Search for the hole in the top middle of your frame and pull your needle through going from the inside to the outside.
• Tuck the top of the purse into the frame making sure the middle of the purse stays in the middle of the frame. It may be a bit annoying to tuck the purse into the frame. You can use one of the legs of your scissors to poke a little.
• Sew from the middle to one side, towards one of the pivot points. At first, you’ll have trouble finding the little holes in the frame, but you’ll get the hang of it. Once you reach the last hole, near the pivot point, tie off.
• Cut another long piece from your embroidery thread and put a small knot in one of the ends. Start in the middle again and sew towards the other pivot point.
• Repeat these steps for the other side of the clutch and frame.

Naai je tasje in het frame

• Dit is het lastigste deel van het naaipatroon, neem er je tijd voor.
• Pak je naald, borduurgaren en je frame erbij.
• Knip een flink stuk draai af en maak een klein knoopje in het uiteinde.
• Vouw je tasje in de lengte doormidden en bepaal aan de bovenkant het midden.
• Begin in het midden bovenin en steek je naald en draad in het midden van de voering door de naad heen. Zoek nu het middelste gaatje van je frame en steek van binnen naar buiten door dit gaatje.
• Stop de bovenkant van je tasje in het frame en zorg dat het midden van het tasje op het midden van het frame blijft. Het kan een beetje een gedoe zijn om het tasje in het frame te krijgen. Gebruik gerust een pootje van je schaar om het allemaal een beetje aan de duwen.
• Naai nu vanaf het midden het tasje vast in het frame naar één van de scharnierpunten toe. Het zal een beetje voelen en duwen zijn waar de gaatjes zitten, maar op een gegeven moment heb je de slag wel te pakken. Als je bij één van de scharnierpunten bent aangekomen, hecht je af.
• Knip weer een lang stuk borduurdraad af en maak een knoopje in het uiteinde. Begin weer in het midden en naai nu vanaf het midden naar het andere scharnierpunt het tasje vast.
• Herhaal bovenstaande stappen voor de andere kant van het frame en tasje.
