Do you have your kids at home? Are they old enough? Well, maybe now is the time to teach them to crochet. It’s fun and they’ll make themselves or their friends something pretty. I’ve listed some really great and easy child-friendly crochet patterns to get you started.
Heb jij kinderen? En zijn ze oud genoeg? Misschien kun je ze wel leren haken. Ze vinden het vast leuk om te doen en ze kunnen iets moois voor zichzelf of hun vriendjes maken. Ik zette een paar leuke en gemakkelijke haakpatronen voor kinderen op een rijtje.
Crochet with kids: some pointers
Crochet with kids? This is a good way to start
- Avoid thin or fuzzy yarn in the beginning. Things will be fidgety enough to start with.
- So, choose a chunky yarn in fun colours. Chunky Monkey springs to mind immediately, as it’s chunky, smooth and easy to work with. Which is rather motivational for kids, or so I hope.
- Logically, also don’t start with a small crochet hook. I guess, crochet hook 5 mm and up is the way to go.
- To get things going, let your kids crocheting long long chains of chains. Remember, this is how we started too, at one point. Crocheting chains enables kids to learn the crochet ‘move’ and teaches them how to carry their yarn.
Wil je haken met kinderen? Met deze tips kun je van start
- Vermijd dun of pluizig garen, in het begin zal het al genoeg friemelen zijn.
- Kies dik garen in vrolijke kleuren, ik moest meteen denken aan Chunky Monkey, daar word je toch meteen vrolijk van. En je werkt er gemakkelijk mee, dus dat werkt motiverend voor kinderen (hopelijk).
- Start dus ook niet met een te dunne haaknaald. Ik zou zeggen: minstens haaknaald 5 mm.
- Begin met eindeloos kettingen lossen haken, zo zijn wij ook ooit begonnen (weet je nog?). Het zorgt er bovendien voor dat kinderen de ‘haakbeweging’ goed in de vingers krijgen en doorkrijgen hoe ze hun garen moeten vasthouden.

Spring is on its way, well apparently. But in the mornings, it is still quite chilly. And, admittedly, I am a huge fan of fingerless gloves. I wear them all the time when I’m running or going on a bike ride. And I think they could be really cool for older kids and they’d make fun presents for their friends. For the exact same reasons, I am completely loving crochet ear warmers. Okay, most boys wouldn’t be caught dead wearing one. And well, that’s okay. I think the stitches of this project are a little more advanced, but the practice will be worth it. The free pattern is by Yarn and Chai.
Om exact dezelfde reden is deze gehaakte hoofdband echt zo leuk. Goed, de jongens zullen er waarschijnlijk van gruwen, maar die moeten dan maar even wat anders haken. Het zal even oefenen zijn met de steek, maar het eindresultaat mag er echt zijn. Het patroon is van Yarn and Chai.

Just pick up a ball of nice and chunky yarn and this number will be done in no time. This tablet case is just a perfect child-friendly crochet pattern. Another really easy and fun child-friendly crochet pattern is a pillowcase. Especially when you let them use soft and chunky yarn. It’s an excellent project to really practise a stitch and learn how to keep crochet edges straight. The free pattern is by Gleeful Things.

Crochet flowers are by far the easiest child-friendly crochet patterns out there. It’s fun to crochet flowers and kids can use them to make garlands or decorate their rooms, clothes or tablet covers. Have fun with pom poms!
Are your kids too little to crochet with? Or they can’t get the hang of crochet just yet? Now, that’s quite alright, isn’t it? There’s a lot more you can do with yarn. Like making pom poms! It’s easy enough to make pom poms, using loo rolls, forks or some cardboard rings. But there are actual pom pom makers out there, in so many shapes and sizes. So you’ll be able to make all kinds of pom poms together with your kids. Pom poms make for fun garlands and necklaces, but can also be used on pillows, blankets and clothes. Fun!
Zijn je kinderen nog niet oud genoeg om te beginnen met haken? Of krijgen ze het niet zo goed onder de knie? Wat geeft het. Er is nog veel meer wat je kunt doen met wol. Zoals pompoms maken. Natuurlijk kun je met closetrollen, vorken of kartonnetjes aan de slag, maar er zijn ook heuse pompom makers waarmee je pompoms in alle vormen en maten kunt maken. Je kunt kettingen maken van pompons, slingers en je kunt kleding, kussen en (fleece) dekens opfleuren met pompons. Superleuk.
